Epidemiology and Mortality of Valvular Heart Disease in Brazilian Adults: Findings from the ELSA-Brasil Cohort

Guilia Bevilacqua Schmitz et al. Eduardo Gatti Pianca Maria Do Carmo Pereira Nunes Bruce Bartholow Duncan … Murilo Foppa Angela Barreto Santiago Santos

Abstract

Background

Most of the current evidence on valvular heart disease (VHD) comes from high-income countries. Access to treatment and the impact of VHD on quality of life may vary substantially across nations, largely due to socioeconomic differences.

Objective

This study aimed to estimate the burden of VHD and its association with mortality in a middle-income country.

Methods

We included participants from the ELSA-Brasil cohort who underwent transthoracic echocardiography at baseline (3,267 participants; 1,539 males; mean age 60.6 ± 8.8 years) across six Brazilian states. Participants were categorized into three groups—no VHD, trace/mild VHD, and moderate/severe VHD—and their characteristics and associated factors were analyzed. P-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.

Results

Among all participants, 2.4% had moderate/severe VHD (including 7 participants with prosthetic valves), and 43.6% had trace/mild VHD. The most prevalent moderate/severe VHD was mitral regurgitation, followed by aortic and tricuspid regurgitation, with 56 participants (86%) presenting isolated valvular regurgitation. Moderate/severe VHD was more common in older individuals and was associated with a higher prevalence of most cardiovascular comorbidities, but with lower obesity rates. It was also associated with greater cardiac remodeling and reduced systolic function, with phenotypic variations depending on the affected valve. Moderate/severe VHD was linked to increased 10-year mortality (HR: 3.7; 95% CI [2.17–6.31]), independent of age, sex, and hypertension.

Conclusion

VHD is common among community-dwelling adults in this middle-income country and increases with age. Participants with moderate/severe VHD exhibited a greater burden of comorbidities, more pronounced cardiac remodeling, worse systolic function, and substantially reduced long-term survival.

Clinical, Demographic, and Socioeconomic Profile of Adults With Congenital Heart Disease at a Reference Center in Salvador, Bahia

Anabel Goes Costa et al. Nilzo Augusto Mendes Ribeiro Adriano Dias Dourado Maria Lucia Duarte Ana Marice Ladeia

Abstract

Background:

Congenital heart disease (CHD) in adults has become an area of growing interest in cardiology due to the increased survival of these patients.

Objective:

to describe the clinical, demographic, and socioeconomic profile of adults with CHD.

Methods:

Cross-sectional study with 371 patients over 18 years of age, followed up at the adult CHD outpatient clinic of Santa Izabel Hospital. A questionnaire was applied to collect demographic and socioeconomic data, and a form with clinical aspects was completed. The chi-square test was used to compare frequencies between groups, with a significance level of p < 0.05.

Results:

Mean age was 30 ± 10 years, 188 (50.6%) women, brown race (61.0%), 216 (73.2%) single, 72 employed patients (24.6%). In this study, 249 patients (67.1%) were acyanotic, 138 (55.4%) showed a hyperflow, 90 (24.3%) had tetralogy of Fallot (T4F), 49 (13.2%) had ostium secundum atrial septal defect (ASD), and 30 (8.1%) had ventricular septal defect (VSD). Median age upon surgery was 8.2 years. Patients were classified as: surgically corrected, 194 (52.8%); surgically cured, 89 (24.2%); awaiting surgery, 8 (2.1%); clinical, 36 (9.8%); inoperable, 22 (6.0%); and surgically palliated, 19 (2.1%). Most were in New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class I (64.5%). Among women, 50 (72.5%) were pregnant, with a neonatal morbidity and mortality rate of 14.0%. Pulmonary hypertension occurred in 17(4.6%) of the patients.

Conclusion:

Our study found a predominant population in the third decade of life, with late surgical correction, good clinical evolution related to the benign nature of the pathologies, and greater survival of surgically cured or corrected cases.

Challenges and Implications of Uncorrected Atrioventricular Septal Defect in Adults: A Complex Case Report

Saulo Rodrigo Cunha et al. Rafael Felipe Minotto Fernanda Pandolfo Fernando Colares Barros … Pedro Tregnago Barcellos Ana Carolina Martins Mazzuca Eduardo Gatti Pianca

Case report

Male patient, 18 years old, admitted to a tertiary care hospital presenting with fever, cough, and dyspnea for the past seven days. According to the patient’s mother, he sought medical attention on the second day of symptoms at an urgent care clinic, where he was prescribed ibuprofen and azithromycin to take at home. Due to lack of improvement, he sought hospital care.

Medical history includes congenital heart disease, specifically a surgically uncorrected AVSD, as he had lost follow-up at the reference hospital since childhood. On physical exam, he appeared in fair condition, with a productive cough, rapid breathing, and cyanosis around the lips and extremities. Hemodynamically stable, with blood pressure of 125 × 86 mmHg, heart rate of 105 bpm in atrial fibrillation rhythm, and oxygen saturation of 69% on room air.

Adult Congenital Heart Disease. Follow-Up Pattern of Care

Fernando Amaral et al. Geraldo Luiz Figueiredo Rafael B. Pavão Paulo Henrique Manso … Luis Gustavo Gali Danilo Tadao Wada André Schmidt

After an early experience reported in this Journal in 2010 and a more detailed analysis published in 2020, there are now over 1600 patients registered in our outpatient clinic. This acquired eighteen years’ experience allowed us to face several situations related to the unit dynamics and to individual patient problems, which we believe might be useful for those particularly in charge of the new emerging unities and also for those already established. Adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients have a prevalence of 4 to 6/1.000 individuals, and most of them have the peculiar profile of a long-standing disease frequently started at birth and often submitted to a cardiovascular intervention. Dr Joseph Perloff, in a landmark article in 1973, emphasized that ACHD patients would never be cured and sequelae and residua after invasive treatment should be expected in most of them. In fact, over the subsequent years, studies have shown that the incidence of residual lesions is almost uniform, justifying routine surveillance, except for a minority of individuals with very simple lesions. As discharge is rare, the number of patients is expected to increase progressively, which might interfere with proper care. Four topics seem to be crucial for us regarding follow-up and are briefly reminded below.

Post-COVID-19 Cardiomyopathy in Children and Adults: Fact or Fiction?

Anna Esther Araujo e Silva et al. Ana Flavia Malheiros Torbey Aurea Lucia Alves de Azevedo Grippa de Souza

Since the emergence of the novel coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19), cardiovascular impairment and alterations in cardiology laboratory tests suggestive of myocardial injury, even in patients without cardiovascular symptoms, have been observed in hospitalized children and adults.–

Epidemiological data from China have suggested that cardiac injury may occur in 19% to 28% of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Several factors seem to contribute to myocardial damage, and potential mechanisms of injury include: hypoxic injury, stress cardiomyopathy, ischemic lesion caused by cardiac microvascular dysfunction, small vessel cardiac vasculitis, endotheliitis, epicardial coronary artery disease, right heart distention (acute cor pulmonale with pulmonary embolism), myocarditis, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (cytokine storm), and others , ().

Post-COVID Cardiomyopathy

Marcio Roberto Moraes de Carvalho et al. Jocemir Ronaldo Lugon Antonio Jose Lagoeiro Jorge

Myocardial inflammation, COVID-19, and HFpEF

Myocardial inflammation is widely considered to be one of the main factors in the development of heart failure (HF). It is believed that persistent myocardial inflammation plays a central role in the development of adverse left ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction, as well as in the pathogenesis of dilated cardiomyopathy and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). –

In May 2020, Tavazzi et al. reported the first case of acute cardiac injury with the finding of SARS-CoV-2 particles and low-grade inflammation in the myocardium, not accompanied by cardiomyocyte necrosis. An important discussion is whether the myocardial changes are caused by direct viral damage to the heart or vasculature or by a cytokine storm related to the infection. It is mainly known that cardiac inflammatory changes induced by viruses are capable of triggering HFpEF and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. There is currently a growing interest in identifying patients with COVID-19 at risk of developing virus-related HF and cardiovascular problems.

Analysis of the Influence of Abdominal Obesity on Systemic Arterial Hypertension and on the Lipid Profile on Cardiometabolic Risk Stratification in Adult Women

Iury Matheus Lima Cavalcanti et al. Cristian Rodrigues do Nascimento Pedro Pereira Tenório Tiago Ferreira da Silva Araújo

Abstract

Background:

Obesity is a public health problem and has been associated with the development of metabolic disorders that have a strong relationship with the onset of cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

Objective:

The objective was to analyze the influence of abdominal obesity (AO) on systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) and on the lipid profile in cardiovascular risk stratification in adult women.

Methods:

Altogether, 91 women participated in the research. Lifestyle information was collected, in addition to the analysis of clinical measures of cardiovascular risk and biochemical parameters. Unpaired Student’s t-test, logistic regression, and Pearson’s correlation were performed for data analysis, with a value of p <0.05 considered significant.

Results:

The prevalence of AO was 62.6%. Logistic regression showed that AO increased the chance of developing SAH by 2.9-fold. The same behavior was observed in the TG/HDL-c lipid ratio (3.93 ± 0.3 vs. 2.16 ± 0.2), representing an 82% increase in obese women. The present study also demonstrated that the best anthropometric parameter to analyze cardiovascular risk in the studied population was the waist/height ratio (AUC = 0.707).

Conclusions:

It can therefore be concluded that AO plays a significant role in the development of SAH and changes in lipid values that predict increased cardiovascular risk, configuring a strong influence factor for CVD.

Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Health: Practical Strategies to Reduce Sedentary Time in Adult Population

Karolinny Borinelli de Aquino Moura et al. Simone Savaris Janice Debastiani Juliana Beust de Lima

Introduction

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is highly prevalent worldwide and is the main cause of death in the general population. The practice of physical activity (PA) has emerged as a primary prevention strategy for CVD, with the potential to control risk factors, and promote a better quality of life and longer survival.

However, despite the scientifically proven benefits, and formal recommendations for the practice of PA for adults, ( ), published data on the world population are alarming. Recent estimates indicate that one in four (27.5%) adults worldwide and almost half of the population in Brazil do not follow the recommendations made by the World Health Organization (WHO). Additionally to physical inactivity, the growing prevalence of sedentary behavior is a current concern ( ).

Clusters of Cardiometabolic Risk Factors and Their Association with Atherosclerosis and Chronic Inflammation among Adults and Elderly in Florianópolis, Southern Brazil

Tiago Rodrigues de Lima et al. Diego Augusto Santos Silva Maruí Weber Corseuil Giehl Eleonora D’Orsi David Alejandro González-Chica

Abstract

Background

The significant increase in cardiovascular diseases in developing countries alerts about their impact on underprivileged populations.

Objective

To identify the relationship of clusters of metabolic syndrome (MS) components with atherosclerosis and chronic inflammation among adults and elderly.

Methods

Cross-sectional analysis using data from two population-based cohort studies in Florianópolis, Southern Brazil (EpiFloripa Adult Cohort Study, n = 862, 39.9±11.5 years; EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study, n = 1197, 69.7±7.1 years). Blood pressure (BP), waist circumference (WC), and lipid and glucose levels were analyzed as individual factors or as clusters (either as the number of components present in an individual or as combinations of components). Outcomes included carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), atherosclerotic plaques, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Multiple linear and logistic regression analyses adjusted for confounding factors were used. The statistical significance adopted was 5%.

Results

Individuals with high BP, elevated WC, dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia (6.1% of the sample) showed higher IMT and CRP than those negatives for all MetS components. Elevated WC was a common determinant of systemic inflammation, while the coexistence of high BP and elevated WC (clusters of two or three factors) was associated with higher IMT (β between +3.2 and +6.1 x 10-2 mm; p value < 0.05) and CRP (EXPβ between 2.18 and 2.77; p value < 0.05).

Conclusion

The coexistence of high BP and elevated WC was associated with increased IMT and CRP levels, but central obesity affected systemic inflammation either alone or in combination with other risk factors.

Karina Mary de Paiva et al. Danúbia Hillesheim Cassiano Ricardo Rech Rodrigo Sudatti Delevatti … Rodrigo Vasconi Sáez Brown Ana Inês Gonzáles Patricia Haas

Abstract

Background

The presence of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) in individuals infected with COVID-19 may imply a worse prognosis.

Objective

To describe the prevalence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) by COVID-19 and to analyze the factors associated with this condition in adults and the elderly with cardiovascular disease in Brazil until the 30th Epidemiological Week of 2020.

Methods

Cross-sectional study conducted with data from the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (Sistema de Informação de Vigilância Epidemiológica da Gripe – SIVEP-Gripe), referring to the SARS notification forms of hospitalized individuals in Brazil, between the 1st and 30th Epidemiological Week of 2020. Adults and the aged (≥ 18 years old) with CVD. The dependent variable was SRAG confirmation by COVID-19 and factors related to sociodemographic characteristics, signs and symptoms, and clinical factors were analyzed. Poisson regression with robust variance was applied. The level of significance adopted was 5%.

Results

Notifications from 116,343 individuals were analyzed. Of these, 61.9% were diagnosed with SARS by COVID-19. The prevalence of the outcome was 4% lower in women (95%CI: 0.94–0.99) and 18% lower in rural areas (95%CI: 0.77–0.87). There was a higher prevalence in the 50 to 59 age group (95%CI: 1.09–1.48) and in the northeast region (95%CI: 1.72–1.91). Fever, cough, admission to the ICU, use of ventilatory support, and nosocomial cases were also significantly associated with a higher probability of SRAS by COVID-19 in these individuals.

Conclusion

There is a high prevalence of SARS by COVID-19 in adults and aged people with CVD in Brazil. Factors associated with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, signs, and symptoms were associated.

Double Outlet Right Ventricle with Unrelated Ventricular Septal Defect and Pulmonary Stenosis, in Natural Evolution, in a 36-Year-Old Woman

Edmar Atik

Introduction

The congenital defect, characterized by the exit of both large arteries from the right ventricle (RV), completely or even when overlapping more than 50% of one of the arteries over the interventricular septum, presents variable relationships between these arteries and the ventricular septal defect (VSD), as well as association with other anatomical and functional variables.

In the most common associated defect, the isolated VSD, in a subaortic position or in that unrelated to the large arteries, the functional condition is expressed with a predominance of volume overload of the heart as a whole, increased by pressure overload, causing early heart failure.

Case 5/2020 – Corrected Transposition of the Great Arteries, with Good Natural Evolution in a 65-Year-Old Woman

Edmar Atik et al. Renato Maluf Auge Alessandra Costa Barreto Maria Angélica Binotto

Clinical data

The patient evolved without symptoms, doing her usual activities of daily living, such as housekeeping and dressmaking, when total atrioventricular block was identified during a routine evaluation with a heart rate of 66 bpm. At this time, a diagnosis of corrected transposition of the great arteries was made through the echocardiogram, with mild left atrioventricular valve regurgitation. Due to insufficient chronotropism and binodal disease, an atrioventricular pacemaker was placed on the right when she was 59 years old. She remained asymptomatic using antihypertensive medication, amlodipine, enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide. She denied any symptoms such as palpitations, chest pain or fatigue.

Physical examination: good overall status, eupneic, acyanotic, normal pulses in the four limbs. Weight: 61 Kgs, Height: 147 cm, BP=118×70 mmHg: 118 x 70 mm Hg, HR: 72 bpm.

Invasive Coronary Physiological Assessment in Symptomatic Middle-Aged Endurance Athletes

Omar M. Issa et al. J. Sawalla Guseh Ignacio Inglessis Aaron L. Baggish

Abstract

Despite the health benefits of routine exercise, coronary artery disease (CAD) is common among older competitive athletes and is an important cause of sudden cardiac death. Athletes with suspected or confirmed CAD routinely undergo conventional coronary angiography involving the performance of invasive coronary physiological assessment using the fractional flow reserve (FFR) or the instantaneous-wave free ratio (iFR). Data defining the role of invasive coronary physiological assessment, while robust in general clinical populations, are untested among older competitive athletes with CAD. The paper discusses the challenges and uncertainties surrounding the use of the FFR and iFR in this unique population with an emphasis on the need for future work to better define this approach.

Subclinical Thyroid Dysfunction was not Associated with Cardiac Arrhythmias in the Cross-Sectional Analysis of the ELSA-Brasil Study

Alexandre de Matos Soeiro

Brazil lacks large cohort studies with analyses of incidence and prevalence of diseases in all areas. In this context, the ELSA-Brasil study was an important milestone for the evaluation of cardiovascular diseases in the country. This study shows a very detailed means of exposing relevant facts to the occurrence or not of arrhythmogenic electrocardiographic manifestations in patients with subclinical thyroid hormone disorders. This issue is extremely relevant, has biological plausibility and generates several doubts regarding the patient.

The study included a relevant sample of 13,341 patients in total, with a mean age of 51 years. The data collection, electrocardiographic specifications and laboratory tests were protocolized according to predetermined and uniform specifications in all patients. Moreover, they were comprehensively evaluated, from arrhythmias supposedly more frequent in thyroid disorders such as atrial fibrillation, plus basal heart rate, presence of extrasystoles and conduction intervals.

Test-Retest Reliability of Non-Invasive Cardiac Output Measurement during Exercise in Healthy Volunteers in Daily Clinical Routine

Michael Thomas Coll Barroso et al. Matthias Wilhelm Hoppe Philip Boehme Thomas Krahn … Christian Kiefer Frank Kramer Thomas Mondritzki Phillipe Pirez Wilfried Dinh

Abstract

Background:

Thoracic bioreactance (TB), a noninvasive method for the measurement of cardiac output (CO), shows good test-retest reliability in healthy adults examined under research and resting conditions.

Objective:

In this study, we evaluate the test-retest reliability of CO and cardiac power (CPO) output assessment during exercise assessed by TB in healthy adults under routine clinical conditions.

Methods:

25 test persons performed a symptom-limited graded cycling test in an outpatient office on two different days separated by one week. Cardiorespiratory (power output, VO2peak) and hemodynamic parameters (heart rate, stroke volume, CO, mean arterial pressure, CPO) were measured at rest and continuously under exercise using a spiroergometric system and bioreactance cardiograph (NICOM, Cheetah Medical).

Results:

After 8 participants were excluded due to measurement errors (outliers), there was no systematic bias in all parameters under all conditions (effect size: 0.2-0.6). We found that all noninvasively measured CO showed acceptable test-retest-reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.59-0.98; typical error: 0.3-1.8). Moreover, peak CPO showed better reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.80-0.85; effect size: 0.9-1.1) then the TB CO, thanks only to the superior reliability of MAP (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.59-0.98; effect size: 0.3-1.8).

Conclusion:

Our findings preclude the clinical use of TB in healthy subject population when outliers are not identified.

Abstract

Background:

Surgical site infections (SSI) are among the most prevalent infections in healthcare institutions, attributing a risk of death which varies from 33% to 77% and a 2- to 11-fold increase in risk of death. Patients submitted to cardiac surgery are more susceptible to SSI, accounting for 3.5% to 21% of SSI. The mortality rate attributable to these causes is as high as 25%. Prevention of SSI in cardiac surgery is based on a bundle of preventive measures, which focus on modifiable risks.

Objective:

The objective of this study was to identify SSI risk factors in clean cardiac surgery.

Methods:

A retrospective cohort study analyzed 1,846 medical records from patients who underwent clean cardiac surgery. Fisher’s exact test was used for bivariate comparison, and Poisson regression was used for independent analysis of SSI risk, considering a significance level of p < 0.05.

Results:

The results of the study comprised a multivariate analysis. The variables that were associated with the diagnosis of SSI were: surgical risk index (OR: 2.575; CI: 1.224-5.416), obesity (OR: 2.068; CI: 1.457-2.936), diabetes mellitus (OR: 1,678; CI: 1.168-2.409), and blood glucose level (OR: 1.004; CI: 1.001-1.007).

Conclusions:

This study evidenced that complete adherence to the bundle was not associated with a reduction in the risk of surgical infections. Diabetes mellitus, obesity, and surgical risk index assessment were, however, identified to increase association and consequently risk of SSI in cardiac surgery.

Case 1 / 2019 – Natural Evolution of Double Outlet Right Ventricle with Noncommitted Ventricular Septal Defect and Pulmonary Stenosis in a 28-Year-Old Asymptomatic Woman

Edmar Atik et al. Alessandra Costa Barreto Maria Angélica Binotto

Clinical data

The patient evolved without symptoms from birth, when the diagnosis of heart disease was made, as evidenced by heart murmur. Two years ago, supraventricular extrasystoles caused the use of atenolol, propafenone, and magnesium, without improvement. Infective endocarditis was effectively treated 10 years ago. The patient uses levothyroxine 50 mcg for hypothyroidism.

Physical examination: good overall status, eupneic, acyanotic, normal pulses in the four limbs. Weight: 60 Kg, Height 160 cm, right upper extremity blood pressure: 120 x 70 mmHg, HR: 60 bpm.

Cardiovascular Risk in Xavante Indigenous Population

Luana Padua Soares et al. Amaury Lelis Dal Fabbro Anderson Soares Silva Daniela Saes Sartorelli … Luciana Ferreira Franco Patrícia Chamadoira Kuhn Regina Santiago Moises João Paulo Botelho Vieira-Filho Laércio Joel Franco

Abstract

Background:

The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors is little known in Brazilian indigenous populations. In the last two decades, important changes have occurred in the lifestyle and epidemiological profile of the Xavante people.

Objective:

to assess the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in Xavante adults in São Marcos and Sangradouro/Volta Grande reserves, in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil.

Methods:

Cross-sectional study carried out with 925 Xavante people aged ≥ 20 years between 2008 and 2012. The following indicators were assessed: triglycerides (TG), total, LDL and HDL-cholesterol, Castelli index I and II, TG/HDL-cholesterol ratio, apo B / Apo A1 ratio, Framingham risk score, C-reactive protein, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hypertriglyceridemic waist (HW), glycemia and blood pressure. Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Student’s t test and Chi-square test (χ2) were used for statistical analysis, and significance level was set at 5%.

Results:

High prevalence of elevated cardiovascular risk was observed in men and women according to HDL-cholesterol (66.2% and 86.2%, respectively), TG (53.2% and 51.5%), TG/HDL-cholesterol ratio (60.0% and 49.1%), C-reactive protein (44.1% and 48.1%), BMI (81.3% and 81.7%), WC (59.1% and 96.2%), HW (38.0% and 50,6%) and glycemia (46.8% and 70.2%). Individuals aged 40 to 59 years had the highest cardiovascular risk.

Conclusions:

The Xavante have a high cardiovascular risk according to several indicators evaluated. The present analysis of cardiovascular risk factors provides support for the development of preventive measures and early treatment, in attempt to minimize the impact of cardiovascular diseases on this population.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Metabolic Syndrome among Brazilian Adult Population: National Health Survey – 2013

Elyssia Karine Nunes Mendonça Ramires et al. Risia Cristina Egito de Menezes Giovana Longo-Silva Taíse Gama dos Santos … Patrícia de Menezes Marinho Jonas Augusto Cardoso da Silveira

Abstract

Background:

In Brazil, population-based researches analyzing prevalence and factors associated with metabolic syndrome (MS), a recognized predictor of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and an important cause of disability and death in the country are scarce.

Objective:

To evaluate prevalence of MS and its associated factors in Brazilian population.

Methods:

Secondary analysis of the 2013 National Health Survey, a cross-sectional survey with national representativeness of Brazilian adult population (n = 59,402). MS was the outcome variable, defined from harmonization of cardiology international consensus as load ≥ 3 of the following components: self-reported diabetes and hypercholesterolemia, high blood pressure and high waist circumference. Analysis were stratified by sex and prevalence ratios, with their respective 99% confidence intervals (PR [CI 99%]) calculated by simple and multiple Poisson regression models.

Results:

MS prevalence was 8.9%, being significantly higher among women compared to men; in general, this pattern was maintained in relation to exposure variables studied. Additionally, less than 25% of population did not present any MS component. In final multiple models, sociodemographic, behavioral and comorbidity variables were associated with MS, however, while low schooling (1.46 [1.23-1.74], cerebrovascular accident (1.36 [1], 00] (1.28 [1.03-1.62]) were associated among women, chronic renal failure (1.85 [2.23-2.76]) was associated exclusively among men.

Conclusion:

We identified MS high prevalence in Brazilian population; on the other hand, factors associated with this condition were different depending on sex.
