The Influence of Seasonal Temperature Variation on Blood Pressure Behavior

Juliana Ribas Escosteguy et al. Murilo Beskow Cezar Roberto Van Der Sand

Abstract

Background:

Hypertension in Brazil affects 32.5% of the population, accounting for 50% of deaths due to cardiovascular disease. The correct measurement and interpretation of blood pressure are essential for attaining an adequate disease diagnosis and management.

Objective:

To verify the correlation between the seasonal temperature variation during 2016 and blood pressure variation in 902 patients of a private Cardiology Service in the city of Porto Alegre/RS.

Method:

A total of 902 ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) results were analyzed in 2016. Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient was used to correlate blood pressure levels with the values of temperature and relative air humidity; the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests were adopted for significance values, assuming an alpha error < 0.05 and a 95% confidence interval. The Analysis of Variance compared the 902 ABPM results with the continuous variables obtained for this study.

Results:

No statistically significant differences were found when the blood pressure values obtained from the 902 ABPM results were correlated with the minimum, mean and maximum values of temperature and relative air humidity, and also when each of the continuous variables obtained for this study were compared with these same pressure measurements.

Conclusion:

Despite the great variation in temperature and relative air humidity throughout the year in the region, there was no significant influence on the systemic arterial pressure in the study population. New comparative studies in the same population with different thermal variations may provide further clarification on this subject.

Seasonal variation of ventricular tachycardia registered in 24-hour Holter monitoring

Maurício Pimentel et al. Letícia Grüdtner Leandro I. Zimerman

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the seasonal variation of ventricular arrhythmias and its correlation with ambient temperature in patients submitted to 24-hour Holter monitoring in the city of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil. METHODS: Holter monitoring reports of 3,034 patients from 1996 to 2002 were analyzed. Ventricular tachycardia (VT) was defined as the presence of 3 or more consecutive ventricular beats, at a rate equal to or higher than 100 beats per minute. Percentage distribution of patients presenting VT by seasons and its correlation with ambient temperature were analyzed. RESULTS: Mean age was 59.2 ± 17.4 years, with a predominance of the female sex (61.9%). Patient distribution by season of the year was: 561 (18.5%) in summer, 756 (24.9%) in fall, 843 (27.8%) in winter and 874 (28.8%) in spring. Fifty-two patients (9.3%) presented VT episodes in summer, 39 (5.2%) in autumn, 56 (6.6%) in winter and 60 (6.9%) in spring (p = 0.035). There was a 40% relative increase in the proportion of patients presenting VT during summer in comparison to winter. There was a trend of increase in the proportion of patients presenting VT with rising temperatures (r = 0.57; p = 0.052). CONCLUSION: The occurrence of VT presents seasonal variations in southern Brazil, with a higher proportion of episodes occurring in summer. There is an association trend between VT and temperature increase.

Increase in mortality due to myocardial infarction in the Brazilian city of São Paulo during winter

Rodolfo Sharovsky et al. Luiz Antônio Machado César

OBJECTIVE: To study the seasonal variation in mortality due to myocardial infarction in the city of São Paulo. METHODS: We analyzed the database of PROAIM (Programa de Aprimoramento de Informações de Mortalidade) containing the registrations of the certificates of deaths due to myocardial infarction (International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition, classification I21) of the residents of the municipality of São Paulo during 12 months (from December 1996 to November 1997). The number of deaths was corrected for a standard period of 90 days and then it was divided by the corresponding population to obtain the event rate per 10 thousand inhabitants. The magnitude of the seasonal variation, which was defined by the difference of the relative risks between the seasons with higher and lower mortality, was estimated. RESULTS: A total of 5,615 deaths due to myocardial infarction were included in the study. Sixty-one per cent occurred in the male sex, and the mean age was 68 years. The mortality rate during winter was always higher and that during summer was lower than that during the other seasons (P<0.01), independent from age and sex. Seasonal variations in deaths due to myocardial infarction was 30% in the general group, being 23% in individuals who died younger than 75 years, and 44% in the older ones. CONCLUSION: A marked seasonal variation in mortality due to myocardial infarction was observed in the city of São Paulo, with a significant increase in its magnitude and age distribution during the winter, similar to those reported in regions of North America and Europe with temperate climates.
