Research and Publication in Brazil: Where we are and Where we Head to

Marcelo Antônio Cartaxo Queiroga Lopes et al. David Brasil Gláucia Maria Moraes de Oliveira

In a report by Clarivate Analytics for the Brazilian Coordination for the Improvement of Higher-Level-Education Personnel (CAPES) about the Brazilian research productivity between 2013 and 2018, Brazil ranked 13th (250 680 publications) among countries with the highest research productivity, corresponding to 11% and 16% of the first ranked countries, United States and China, respectively., In that period, the publications in Brazil increased by 30%, twice the global mean, with over 50 000 articles published in 2018 only.

A good example of that increase has been described in the study analyzing the number of papers published in Nature and Science from the University of São Paulo, University of Campinas, and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, from 1980 onwards. The publication counts were categorized by decade from 1980 to 2010 and for 2017. The authors have reported that those institutions together published 0.08 papers, on average, in each edition of those two journals. The total number of papers from those universities increased by 2200% from 1980 to 2017, with a higher representativity in the past decade (from 7 papers in 2010 to 23 in 2017). It is worth noting the increase in partnership with international institutions for the publication of scientific papers.

ABC Cardiol – Our Home of the Cardiovascular Scientific Research

Carlos E. Rochitte

ABC Cardiol, the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, an official journal of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology has been the premier scientific journal for conveying cardiovascular science publications in Brazil. In 2018 as the new editor-in-chief, I proposed two main approaches to further increase ABC Cardiol relevance in the scientific community. The first one was to increase our journal impact factor, which had been stabilized slightly above 1 and, secondly to increase the internationalization of the journal, which was recommended by Scielo.

Our most recent journal impact factor (2019) is 1.450 and the 5-year impact factor of 1.724, the highest in our history. Additionally, the number of citations in a given year also reached its all-time highest number of 3065 citations in just one year ( ). There has been an upward trend of our journal impact factor, from the previous 1.318 (2017) and highest impact at 1.679 (2018) , ( ). International collaboration has been increasing significantly. Currently, about 11% of our published articles are from authors of more than one country (multinational, ), and 22% of articles are originating from countries other than Brazil ( ). Our editorial board has now international associated editors that are the angular stone for increasing international collaboration and publications in the ABC Cardiol. Moreover, collaboration with the international scientific community and societies has been boosted.

Interaction among Cardiovascular Scientific Journals in Brazil: A Model that should be Better Explored

Carlos Eduardo Rochitte

In the environment of intense, and apparently unlimited competition among scientific journals for the best article, and the highest number of citations and impact factor (IF), the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (ABC Cardiol) has taken actions to foster the growth of other journals with similar scope in the national scientific community. The main objective is to promote dissemination of our best science by journals of increasingly higher quality, so that it can attract deserving attention and make a stronger contribution to the world scientific community.

With the current IF of nearly 1.7 according to the Journal of Citation Reports (JCR), the ABC Cardiol has attracted more and more submissions from national and international authors., Our acceptance rate is no more than 15% and tends to decrease even more. In this scenario, many papers of significant quality cannot be accepted for publication in the ABC Cardiol, including articles from studies developed in our successful postgraduate programs. This has an undesirable effect – the reduced exposure of our best science in indexation sources such as PubMED, Scielo, among others.

Just-Released JCR Impact Factor Shows Strong and Steady Increase for ABC Cardiol – 1.679 – A New Historical Record

Carlos E. Rochitte

Dear friends from the Cardiology and Cardiovascular scientific community in Brazil and abroad, please allow me this short editorial with extraordinary news on the ABC Cardiol Journal, accompanied by data, of course.

We are delighted to announce that our peer-reviewed journal of The Brazilian Society of Cardiology, the ABC Cardiol (Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia), has seen significant increase in its impact factor rating in the latest Journal of Citation Reports (JCR) release. Our impact factor went up from 1.318, released last year (2017 rate) to 1.679 this year (2018 rate), a 27% increase in one year and the highest impact factor ever for ABC Cardiol.

Impact of Brazilian papers in cardiology and cardiovascular sciences in the last decade

Luiz Felipe P. Moreira

During the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of Brazilian publications in cardiology and cardiovascular sciences in important international citation indexing platforms. This occurred in Brazil and in most Latin American countries at approximately 13% per year between 1999 and 2008 according to the study by Colantionio et al. This represents nearly 3% of all articles published in international journals indexed in the Web of Science platform, maintained by Thompson-Reuters, and Scopus-Scimago, provided by Elsevier.

Although most of our indexed articles have been published in international journals, the citation indexes achieved by Brazilian and Latin American authors are usually lower than those from countries with higher income or higher Human Development Index. This is even more evident for studies conducted in national institutions in comparison with those developed with some degree of international cooperation.

Cardiology Journals from Portuguese-Speaking Countries: Challenges and Opportunities

Luiz Felipe P. Moreira

Scientific development is currently happening at an increasingly faster pace. With this situation, the scientific journals are required to commit to disseminating new knowledge with greater agility and broad propagation by the main international indexers. On the other hand, the mission of the scientific journals is also to encourage the propagation and discussion of new subjects in scientific communities, a situation of great importance mainly for those journals associated with medical societies and with a predominantly national circulation.

With respect to scientific propagation at an international level, the use of the English language has been well defined as being universal, leaving those publications in other languages to the background. Only articles published in English in broadly indexed journals achieve a greater number of citations, collaborating effectively in consolidating the involved research groups and elevating the impact of the periodicals in which they were published. On the other hand, health professionals in several countries still encounter difficulties in accessing the international scientific literature and find in their local language the primary means to keep up with new knowledge.

Is there any Influence of Journal Impact Factor on the Citation Index of Articles Published in Brazilian Journals with International Scope?

Luiz Felipe P. Moreira

With the recent disclosure of the journals impact factors of 2014 by Thomson-Reuters, we verified that the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology maintained its Impact Factor (IF) at the same levels observed in recent years, contrary to the expected prospects since the publication of its first index five years ago. A similar situation has also been observed regarding most journals with international scope published in Brazil, despite the many efforts by their editors to attract the publication of the best scientific quality articles, as well as to improve publication editorial quality.

The fact that the IF has remained unchanged represents a significant problem for the national publication journals, as the Brazilian postgraduate courses are the most important suppliers of high-quality works for publication and the main mission of our journals is precisely to facilitate the dissemination of scientific research carried out in our country. As the result of the maintenance of the scoring criteria of postgraduate programs by the Higher Education Personnel Training Coordination (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – Capes) of the Ministry of Education, based on the impact factor of journals where our scientists publish their research, a vicious circle is formed, which does not favor the development of our publications.

The representativeness of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia for Brazilian Cardiology Science

Paulo Roberto Barbosa Evora et al. Luiz Felipe P. Moreira

The front page of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (Brazilian Archives of Cardiology) discloses an objective view of the current representativeness of the journal:

Considering the historical and academic significance of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, since its indexing in MEDLINE that started in 1950, some authors have assumed the hypothesis that the analysis of publications in the last 60 years could reflect the changing trends of heart disease in Brazil. The existence of an epidemiological link between cardiac diseases that are prevalent in Brazil and the publications of the Arquivos has been suggested. This evidence, associated with planning, publications and guideline updates, leaves no doubt about its crucial importance for Brazilian Cardiology–.

Why publish in national journals?

Max Grinberg et al. Maria Cecília Solimene Maria do Carmo Cavarette Barreto

The reluctance of Brazilian authors to publish in Brazilian journals is historical and no longer justified. Currently, several Brazilian journals are indexed in international databases, of which English versions allow disclosure of our studies to foreign countries. The authors express their views on the importance of publishing in national journals and cite the example of the impact of publications from Instituto do Coração – InCor-HCFMUSP in the past two years.
