ABC Cardiol – Our Home of the Cardiovascular Scientific Research

Carlos E. Rochitte

ABC Cardiol, the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, an official journal of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology has been the premier scientific journal for conveying cardiovascular science publications in Brazil. In 2018 as the new editor-in-chief, I proposed two main approaches to further increase ABC Cardiol relevance in the scientific community. The first one was to increase our journal impact factor, which had been stabilized slightly above 1 and, secondly to increase the internationalization of the journal, which was recommended by Scielo.

Our most recent journal impact factor (2019) is 1.450 and the 5-year impact factor of 1.724, the highest in our history. Additionally, the number of citations in a given year also reached its all-time highest number of 3065 citations in just one year ( ). There has been an upward trend of our journal impact factor, from the previous 1.318 (2017) and highest impact at 1.679 (2018) , ( ). International collaboration has been increasing significantly. Currently, about 11% of our published articles are from authors of more than one country (multinational, ), and 22% of articles are originating from countries other than Brazil ( ). Our editorial board has now international associated editors that are the angular stone for increasing international collaboration and publications in the ABC Cardiol. Moreover, collaboration with the international scientific community and societies has been boosted.

The New Impact Factor of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (ABC Cardiol), 1.318: An Achievement of the SBC for Our Scientific Community

Carlos Eduardo Rochitte

The ABC Cardiol is indexed in the main databases, such as ISI Web of Science, Cumulated Index Medicus – MEDLINE, Pubmed Central, EMBASE, SCOPUS, SCIELO and LILACS, and it has obtained an Impact Factor (IF) of 1.318 from JCR, as well as a B2 rating by the CAPES Qualis System. According to the list recently released by the Journal Citation Reports 2018, 12,271 journals were ranked with a wide IF variability. Of these, 130 journals were in the field of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Sciences, and the European Heart Journal leads with 23,425. Around 58% of these publications have IFs below 2.0, among which the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (ABC Cardiol), which has the best IF for journals in the area of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Sciences in Brazil, i.e., 1.318, with a total of 2,541 citations in 2017 ().

Conflict of interest policies and disclosure requirements among European Society of Cardiology National Cardiovascular Journals

Fernando Alfonso et al. Adam Timmis Fausto J. Pinto Giuseppe Ambrosio … Hugo Ector Piotr Kulakowski Panos Vardas

Disclosure of potential conflicts of interest (COI) is used by biomedical journals to guarantee credibility and transparency of the scientific process. COI disclosure, however, is not systematically nor consistently dealt with by journals. Recent joint editorial efforts paved the way towards the implementation of uniform vehicles for COI disclosure. This paper provides a comprehensive editorial perspective on classical COI-related issues. New insights into current COI policies and practices among European Society of Cardiology national cardiovascular journals, as derived from a cross-sectional survey using a standardised questionnaire, are discussed.

Why publish in national journals?

Max Grinberg et al. Maria Cecília Solimene Maria do Carmo Cavarette Barreto

The reluctance of Brazilian authors to publish in Brazilian journals is historical and no longer justified. Currently, several Brazilian journals are indexed in international databases, of which English versions allow disclosure of our studies to foreign countries. The authors express their views on the importance of publishing in national journals and cite the example of the impact of publications from Instituto do Coração – InCor-HCFMUSP in the past two years.

Recent cardiopulmonary studies

Maurício Rocha-e-Silva

Over the period 2009 – 2010, Clinics has published a relatively large number of original studies dealing with the cardiovascular and pulmonary system. Twenty of these have attracted significant numbers of citations within this relatively short time span. This short review covers these aspects of recent research with direct interest to cardiologists. Articles were grouped under three headings: Cardiology, Pneumology and Multidisciplinary

Publication trends in the quartely, bimonthly and monthly cycles of publication in the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology over five decades

Alfredo José Mansur et al. Adriana Salatini Abud Cícero Piva de Albuquerque

OBJECTIVE: To study trends in selected manuscript characteristics of articles published in the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology from March 1948, to February 1998, in the quarterly, bimonthly and monthly cycles of publication. METHODS: A random sample of 25% of all issues of the journal comprised the study sample: 13 issues (11.5%) from the quarterly, 27 (23,5%) from the bimonthly, and 58 (65%) from the monthly publication cycle. We studied the type of manuscript, number of authors, geographical distribution, language of publication and references. RESULTS: A total of 1204 articles were studied, 90 (7.5%) from the quarterly, 238 (19,8%) from the bimonthly, and 876 (72.8%) from the monthly publication cycle. The most frequent published articles were original contributions (353), reviews (350) and case reports (205). No significant difference occurred in the proportion of original articles, reviews and case reports; the number of authors was higher in the monthly period;a geographical concentration of the contributions occurred (72% from three Brazilian States); manuscripts in languages other than Portuguese decreased. The mean number of Brazilian references cited was less than 4.7 and the mean number of international references cited was greater than 16.7. CONCLUSION: The analysis of the trends over five decades of publication revealed the need for further steps to be taken by the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology, to meet international publication standards for biomedical journals as well as authors’ and readers’ demands.
