ABC Cardiol – The Editor-in-Chief-Way Ahead in 2022 to 2025

Carlos Eduardo Rochitte

The Brazilian Archives of Cardiology (ABC Cardiol) is the scientific journal with the greatest impact on Cardiology in Brazil and Latin America. In its history, it has had the fundamental role of disclosing the national scientific production in a journal indexed in all the most significant international databases and in the English language. At present, it is, therefore, the true window of our scientific production to the World.

The positive evolutions and results we have achieved in this current administration are supported by continuous actions from previous ABC Cardiol administrations. Here I take this opportunity to text my thanks to all the previous Editors-in-Chief, who were fundamental in the growth of ABC Cardiol and who allowed the current leadership to achieve positive results, such as the impact factor of 2.0 in the Journal of Citation Report. The word here is gratitude to all those who directly or indirectly contributed and support the success of ABC Cardiol and, especially, our scientific community.

Impact Factor of 2.0, a New Historical Record for ABC Cardiol – Many Thanks to our Cardiology and Scientific Community

Carlos Eduardo Rochitte

The Brazilian Society of Cardiology’s most traditional scientific journal, with 73 years of history, Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia or ABC Cardiol, has recently reached a new level of international recognition based on its 2020 impact factor, which is a new historical record.

ABC Cardiol‘s new impact factor is 2.0, as published by the 2020 Journal of Citation Report (JCR, Clarivate), which means that, on average, each article published in ABC Cardiol was cited 2 times by other articles. This represents the impact of scientific data published in ABC Cardiol in the actively productive scientific community. This index has been progressively rising over the past years, and the impact factor of 2 is not merely an isolated number ().– It is also highly noteworthy that ABC Cardiol holds first place among cardiovascular science journals in Latin America in international rankings, such as Scopus ().

ABC Cardiol – Our Home of the Cardiovascular Scientific Research

Carlos E. Rochitte

ABC Cardiol, the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, an official journal of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology has been the premier scientific journal for conveying cardiovascular science publications in Brazil. In 2018 as the new editor-in-chief, I proposed two main approaches to further increase ABC Cardiol relevance in the scientific community. The first one was to increase our journal impact factor, which had been stabilized slightly above 1 and, secondly to increase the internationalization of the journal, which was recommended by Scielo.

Our most recent journal impact factor (2019) is 1.450 and the 5-year impact factor of 1.724, the highest in our history. Additionally, the number of citations in a given year also reached its all-time highest number of 3065 citations in just one year ( ). There has been an upward trend of our journal impact factor, from the previous 1.318 (2017) and highest impact at 1.679 (2018) , ( ). International collaboration has been increasing significantly. Currently, about 11% of our published articles are from authors of more than one country (multinational, ), and 22% of articles are originating from countries other than Brazil ( ). Our editorial board has now international associated editors that are the angular stone for increasing international collaboration and publications in the ABC Cardiol. Moreover, collaboration with the international scientific community and societies has been boosted.

Interaction among Cardiovascular Scientific Journals in Brazil: A Model that should be Better Explored

Carlos Eduardo Rochitte

In the environment of intense, and apparently unlimited competition among scientific journals for the best article, and the highest number of citations and impact factor (IF), the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (ABC Cardiol) has taken actions to foster the growth of other journals with similar scope in the national scientific community. The main objective is to promote dissemination of our best science by journals of increasingly higher quality, so that it can attract deserving attention and make a stronger contribution to the world scientific community.

With the current IF of nearly 1.7 according to the Journal of Citation Reports (JCR), the ABC Cardiol has attracted more and more submissions from national and international authors., Our acceptance rate is no more than 15% and tends to decrease even more. In this scenario, many papers of significant quality cannot be accepted for publication in the ABC Cardiol, including articles from studies developed in our successful postgraduate programs. This has an undesirable effect – the reduced exposure of our best science in indexation sources such as PubMED, Scielo, among others.

The Top 10 Original Articles Published in the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia and in the Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia in 2019

Gláucia Maria Moraes de Oliveira et al. Ricardo Fontes-Carvalho Lino Gonçalves Nuno Cardim Carlos Eduardo Rochitte

Introduction

For centuries, Portugal and Brazil have shared a tradition of cooperation, which applies to medicine. In cardiology, for example, their national scientific societies – the Brazilian Society of Cardiology and the Portuguese Society of Cardiology – have a long history of collaboration, which extends to their journals.

The Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia ( Arq Bras Cardiol ), the official scientific publication of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, with an impact factor of 1.679 in 2018 (JCR), is the most influential cardiology journal in Brazil and Latin America. This can be exemplified by the increasing number of submissions to the Arq Bras Cardiol (650 in 2017, 771 in 2018, and 734 in 2019), and by its h5 index of 31 and h5 median of 39, with acceptance rate lower than 20%.

Internationalization is Necessary, But is it Enough?

Gláucia Maria Moraes de Oliveira et al. Andrea De Lorenzo Fernanda Marciano Consolim Colombo Eduardo Back Sternick … Andréa Araujo Brandão Sergio Emanuel Kaiser Alexandre Schaan de Quadros Renato Abdala Karam Kalil Christianne Brêtas Vieira Scaramello Francisco Rafael Martins Laurindo Ludhmila Abrahão Hajjar

Globalization has left its mark on the 21st century. One of the many ways of defining globalization is as the integration of information, communication, and economy on a worldwide scale, with a direct influence on all levels of higher education. In this manner, the internationalization of postgraduation may be seen as a response to globalization, taking shape in the form of programs and policies put in place by academic institutions and governments in order to increase student and faculty exchanges and to stimulate and strengthen partnerships in research, among other actions. Universities and research centers have, in fact, been practicing these actions for a long time, but they have expanded significantly, particularly during this century.

Various studies– have repeatedly shown that collaborative research that involves authors from multiple institutions and/or countries have an identifiably greater impact than research involving only one group or institution. In Brazil, the internationalization of postgraduation has been highly valued by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), generating immense efforts on the part of postgraduate programs (PGPs) to achieve the goals defined. In a study conducted with PGPs ranked 6 or 7 by CAPES, Ramos observed that internationalization in these PGPs encompasses everything from international mobility, international cooperation networks, academic output (international publications, international co-authorships, presentation of academic work in international scientific conferences and meetings), to access to resources through the sharing of research facilities and international funding. In Brazilian PGPs, the most popular internationalization strategies were international mobility of faculty, researchers, and students and international research collaboration, implemented mainly through international cooperation agreements. This study, nevertheless, detected inequalities between institutions in the provision of adequate conditions for internationalization. The availability of financial resources, the existence of regulatory frameworks, and organizational support were considered important requisites for achieving this goal.

For a Model of Self-Citation Governance in Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia

Marcos Antonio Almeida-Santos et al. Deyse Mirelle Souza Santos Beatriz Santana Prado José Augusto Barreto-Filho

Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (ABC) has been the official scientific publication of Brazilian Society of Cardiology (Sociedade Brasileira de Cardiologia, SBC) since 1948. Since its beginning, ABC has continuously published articles on a wide range of topics in cardiology, becoming the main organ of dissemination of scientific work in Brazil and Portuguese-speaking countries. Since 1950, the articles have been indexed in the main international databases (Institute of Scientific Information – ISI Web of Science; Cumulated Index Medicus – MEDLINE; Pubmed Central; EMBASE; SCOPUS; SCIELO and LILACS), and are currently published in two languages (English and Portuguese). Thomson Reuters publishing company, owner of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) statistical database, created the concept of impact factor in 1955, aiming to provide an instrument to evaluate the performance of scientific publications in a comparative and quantitative manner. Impact factor is calculated by dividing the number of citations of articles published in an academic or technical journal indexed in the ISI by the total number of articles published in that journal during the two preceding years. These estimates include approximately 3,300 journals, 200 subject areas and 100 countries.

Impact factor is a metric for journal assessment, widely used by researchers to choose the best journal to submit their papers. However, its validity as an indicator of scientific impact has been questioned due to, among others, self-promoting journal self-citation in attempt to increase their impact factor. Overuse of self-citation practices is punishable, and caused the exclusion of 5 Brazilian journals from the JCR for one year (2013). For this reason, efficient control measures of this practice should be developed and implemented by scientific journals that seek to adhere to ethical precepts recommended by the scientific community.

The New Impact Factor of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (ABC Cardiol), 1.318: An Achievement of the SBC for Our Scientific Community

Carlos Eduardo Rochitte

The ABC Cardiol is indexed in the main databases, such as ISI Web of Science, Cumulated Index Medicus – MEDLINE, Pubmed Central, EMBASE, SCOPUS, SCIELO and LILACS, and it has obtained an Impact Factor (IF) of 1.318 from JCR, as well as a B2 rating by the CAPES Qualis System. According to the list recently released by the Journal Citation Reports 2018, 12,271 journals were ranked with a wide IF variability. Of these, 130 journals were in the field of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Sciences, and the European Heart Journal leads with 23,425. Around 58% of these publications have IFs below 2.0, among which the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (ABC Cardiol), which has the best IF for journals in the area of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Sciences in Brazil, i.e., 1.318, with a total of 2,541 citations in 2017 ().

New Editor-in-Chief, New Challenges

Carlos Eduardo Rochitte

It was a great honor and privilege to be appointed to serve as the new editor-in-chief of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia for the 2018-2021 period. In this first editorial, I would like to thank my peers and colleagues, who have manifested sincere and total support to my indication. It is undoubtedly a great challenge to contribute to the most important scientific journal of Cardiology in South America.

Moreover, it is on the shoulders of the previous editors-in-chief that I humbly make myself available to collaborate with this communication channel of the Brazilian Cardiology. The work here developed is monumental and was only possible because of the collaboration of the associate editors and reviewers, who are part of the great family of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia. And it will go on like this. Thus, I ask for the support of all involved in the task in the coming years.

Is there any Influence of Journal Impact Factor on the Citation Index of Articles Published in Brazilian Journals with International Scope?

Luiz Felipe P. Moreira

With the recent disclosure of the journals impact factors of 2014 by Thomson-Reuters, we verified that the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology maintained its Impact Factor (IF) at the same levels observed in recent years, contrary to the expected prospects since the publication of its first index five years ago. A similar situation has also been observed regarding most journals with international scope published in Brazil, despite the many efforts by their editors to attract the publication of the best scientific quality articles, as well as to improve publication editorial quality.

The fact that the IF has remained unchanged represents a significant problem for the national publication journals, as the Brazilian postgraduate courses are the most important suppliers of high-quality works for publication and the main mission of our journals is precisely to facilitate the dissemination of scientific research carried out in our country. As the result of the maintenance of the scoring criteria of postgraduate programs by the Higher Education Personnel Training Coordination (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – Capes) of the Ministry of Education, based on the impact factor of journals where our scientists publish their research, a vicious circle is formed, which does not favor the development of our publications.

The representativeness of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia for Brazilian Cardiology Science

Paulo Roberto Barbosa Evora et al. Luiz Felipe P. Moreira

The front page of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (Brazilian Archives of Cardiology) discloses an objective view of the current representativeness of the journal:

Considering the historical and academic significance of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, since its indexing in MEDLINE that started in 1950, some authors have assumed the hypothesis that the analysis of publications in the last 60 years could reflect the changing trends of heart disease in Brazil. The existence of an epidemiological link between cardiac diseases that are prevalent in Brazil and the publications of the Arquivos has been suggested. This evidence, associated with planning, publications and guideline updates, leaves no doubt about its crucial importance for Brazilian Cardiology–.
