Selecting a Journal for Publication: Should Impact Factor be the Primary Criterion to Consider?

Marcella dos Santos Lopes da Silva et al. Claudio Tinoco Mesquita

The first scientific journal published with peer review was the “Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London,” published by the Royal Society of London in 1665. The journal was founded by Henry Oldenburg, who was the first secretary of the Royal Society. Peer review was a significant advancement in scientific method, as it involves the evaluation of articles by independent experts invited by the journal’s editorial board, ensuring that they are reviewed before publication. The goal of peer review is to assess whether that the articles are of high quality and the presented information is accurate, easily interpretable, and reliable.

Every scientist is confronted with the decision of choosing the most suitable venue to submit their findings for publication. For this purpose, authors tend to look for journals with greater visibility to ensure that their research will be widely recognized and will have a positive impact on their academic careers. Among the various factors considered when deciding the best journal for publication, the Impact Factor (IF) is considered one of the most important. The IF was created by Eugene Garfield, the founder of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), in 1955. The IF reflects the influence of a scientific journal by calculating the ratio of the number of citations received by a journal in a year to the number of articles published by the journal in the previous two years. In general, the more frequently an article from a journal is cited by other scientists, the more important it is to the scientific community, and the more relevant the journal is. Thus the IF helps scientists and other professionals dealing with scientific information to assess the importance of a scientific journal… A higher IF generally indicates that articles from a particular journal are cited more frequently, indicating its greater influence within the scientific community.

2021 Top 10 Articles in the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia and the Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia

Ricardo Fontes-Carvalho et al. Gláucia Maria Moraes de Oliveira Pedro Gonçalves-Teixeira Carlos Eduardo Rochitte Nuno Cardim

Introduction

Annually the Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia (RPC) and the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (ABC) have gathered to elaborate a special article with the selection of their best original publications.– Over the years, the high quality of their papers has become clear, evidencing the dynamism of cardiovascular investigation in Portuguese-speaking countries.

Following tradition, the editorial bodies of the RPC and the ABC met once again to select the ten best articles published in 2021 by each of those journals ( and ). Although the year 2021 was marked again by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, both journals had excellent publications in all areas of Cardiovascular Medicine, from cardiovascular prevention to heart failure (HF), including an excellent selection of papers on the COVID-19 pandemic in the Brazilian and Portuguese populations. The high quality of the publications in both journals makes the selection of the best articles a complex task.

Impact Factor of 2.0, a New Historical Record for ABC Cardiol – Many Thanks to our Cardiology and Scientific Community

Carlos Eduardo Rochitte

The Brazilian Society of Cardiology’s most traditional scientific journal, with 73 years of history, Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia or ABC Cardiol, has recently reached a new level of international recognition based on its 2020 impact factor, which is a new historical record.

ABC Cardiol‘s new impact factor is 2.0, as published by the 2020 Journal of Citation Report (JCR, Clarivate), which means that, on average, each article published in ABC Cardiol was cited 2 times by other articles. This represents the impact of scientific data published in ABC Cardiol in the actively productive scientific community. This index has been progressively rising over the past years, and the impact factor of 2 is not merely an isolated number ().– It is also highly noteworthy that ABC Cardiol holds first place among cardiovascular science journals in Latin America in international rankings, such as Scopus ().

Doctorate in cardiology at FM-USP heart institute from 1994 through 2004: defense and publication

Julio Flávio Meirelles Marchini et al. Bruno Caramelli

BACKGROUND: A study evaluated the relationship between the defense of dissertations and their publication within the realm of the entire Medical School of the University of São Paulo (FM-USP). The existence of differences among different areas of knowledge and the time between defense of dissertations and their publication is questioned. OBJECTIVE: To characterize publications related to dissertations defended in graduate courses of the Heart Institute (InCor) of the University of São Paulo Medical School (FM-USP). METHODS: A retrospective survey was carried out featuring graduate work at FM/USP for the 1994 – 2004 period. Initially, data were collected on students who defended dissertations during this period, on their advisors, and on the dissertations defended in the course of the period. Then, by crossing these data with data from Medline® and Web of Science®, publications by these authors and data were located that referred to the respective publications. RESULTS: During that period, 268 dissertations were defended, resulting in 195 publications within a period of up to 10 years after their defense. The median time for publication after defense was one year and nine months, with a median impact factor of 2.1, and a median of 4 citations per paper. There was no statistically significant correlation among any of the data studied. CONCLUSION: A significant percentage of the dissertations were published, and in the group studied, publication took place within increasingly short times after their defense. This fact may be related to the success of the graduate commissions’ policies and to the importance currently lent to debates on this theme, all of which contribute to improvement in the quality of graduate studies.
