Herbal Therapy in Post-Menopause

Rosana dos Santos e Silva Martin et al. Luis Cuadrado Martin

Traditional Chinese medicine and its modern products have shown potential in treating atherosclerosis. The possible mechanisms include regulation of blood lipids, anti-lipid peroxidation, anti-polymerization, anticoagulation, and pro-fibrinolysis, inhibition of smooth muscle cell proliferation, and protection of vascular endothelial function. Ginseng derivatives are being used in menopause treatment and andropause treatment.

The paper “Chronic Treatment with Panax ginseng and Angelica keiskei Decreases Blood Pressure and Improves Endothelial Function in Ovariectomized Rats”, published in this journal, obtained improvement in blood pressure in ovariectomized rats treated by Panax ginseng and Angelica keiskei This effect was associated with amelioration of endothelial function.

Risk Factors Associated with High Blood Pressure in Two-to Five-Year-Old Children

Paula Azevedo Aranha Crispim et al. Maria do Rosário Gondim Peixoto Paulo César Brandão Veiga Jardim

Background:

Over recent decades, the prevalence of high blood pressure (BP) has increased among children. Several risk factors are involved in the genesis of high BP during childhood, and their early identification can prevent the development of that disease.

Objectives:

To assess the prevalence of high BP and associated factors in children.

Methods:

Cross-sectional, population-based study, carried out at the household. This study included 276 two- to five-year-old children in the city of Goiânia, state of Goiás, and assessed their BP, sociodemographic characteristics, birth weight, high BP family history, passive smoking, maternal breastfeeding, dietary habits, sedentary lifestyle and nutritional status. Poisson regression was used to assess the association between risk factors and high BP.

Results:

Their mean age was 3.1 ± 0.79 years, and high BP and overweight were observed in 19.9% and 11.2% of the children, respectively. Direct association of high BP was identified with age [prevalence ratio (PR) = 2.3; 95%CI: 1.2 – 4.8; p = 0.017] and overweight (PR = 2.0; 95%CI: 1.2 – 3.6; p = 0.014). No other variable associated with high BP.

Conclusions:

The prevalence of high BP in children was high. Overweight and younger children had greater prevalence of high BP.

High blood pressure and some risk factors in a brazilian capital

Paulo César B. Veiga Jardim et al. Maria do Rosário Peixoto Gondim Estelamaris Tronco Monego Humberto Graner Moreira … Priscila Valverde de Oliveira Vitorino Weimar Kunz Sebba Barroso Souza Luiz César Nazário Scala

OBJECTIVES: Estimate the prevalence of hypertension and some cardiovascular risk factors in the adult population of a major city in Brazil. METHODS: Descriptive, observational, transversal population-based study substantiated by the home survey of a simple random sample (>18 years old). Standardized questionnaires were used to obtain sociodemographic information, measurements of blood pressure (2 measurements), weight, height, and abdominal circumference (AC). Microsoft Access and Epi Info 6 were used for data storage and analysis, respectively. The last blood pressure reading was used (hypertension: BP>140x90mmHg). RESULTS: The study evaluated 1,739 individuals (87% of the estimated sample). There was a predominance of females (65.4%) and mean age was 39.7 years (±15.6); arterial hypertension prevalence was 36.4%, higher for the male population (41.8%) when compared to females (31.8%). Correlation between Hypertension and Body Mass Index was positive, as well as with AC and age. The female gender and higher income were protective factors against hypertension. There was no correlation with schooling. Prevalence of overweight and obesity were 30.0% and 13.6%, respectively; overweight was higher among females and obesity among males. The prevalence of smoking was 20.1%, more frequent among males (27.1%), when compared to females (16.4%). A sedentary lifestyle was observed in 62.3% of the population, with no difference between the genders. Regular alcohol consumption was reported by 44.4% of the individuals, being more frequent in males. CONCLUSION: Hypertension and other cardiovascular risk factors (particularly overweight/obesity) indicators are high, reinforcing the need for objective nationwide measures to fight this disease, in order to reduce CVD morbidity and mortality.

High blood pressure among bank employees. Life-style and treatment

Dóra Chor

PURPOSE: This study estimates the frequency of treatment of high blood pressure and compares life-styles among hipertensives and non-hipertensives. METHODS: Cross-sectional study in a sistematic sample of 1183 employees in a government-owned bank in the State of Rio de Janeiro, through a self-administered questionnaire. Direct measurements of arterial pressure, weight and height were also taken in a sub-sample. Those who had been informed more than once as having high blood pressure, by a health professional, were classified as hipertensives. RESULTS: There were no important differences among hipertensives and non-hipertensives with respect to the prevalence of smoking, alcohol and physical activities. Dieting was more frequent among overweight/obese hipertensives than overweight/obese non-hipertensives. Only 44,7% were under treatment. Subjects with high level of education were more likely to be treated as were those who quit smoking, presented overweight/obesity or family history of cerebrovascular diseases. CONCLUSION: Access to information and health care was not sufficient to guarantee high blood pressure treatment or a healthy life-style which contributes to hypertension control.

Laboratory assessment of the hypertensive individual. Value of the main guidelines for high blood pressure

Rafael S. Reis et al. Isabela J. Benseñor Paulo A. Lotufo

OBJECTIVE: To determine if abnormal laboratory findings are more common in individuals with hypertension and in those with other risk factors, such as obesity, smoking and alcohol ingestion. METHODS: A study was carried out in the general outpatient clinics of a university hospital (145 individuals without previous diagnosis of hypertension) and the following variables were assessed: high blood pressure (as defined by the VI Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection and Treatment of High Blood Pressure – VI JNC), obesity [calculated using body mass index (BMI)], tobacco use, and alcoholic ingestion. The laboratory examinations consisted of the following tests: hemogram, glycemia, uric acid, potassium, total/HDL-fraction cholesterol, triglycerides, calcium and creatinine. RESULTS: High blood pressure was not associated with a higher number of abnormal laboratory tests. Hypertensive individuals with a BMI > or = 25kg/m² or normotensive obese individuals, however, had a higher frequency of diabetes (12X), hypertriglyceridemia (3X), and hypercholesterolemia (2X), as compared with hypertensive individuals with BMI <25kg/m² and preobese/normal weight normotensive individuals. CONCLUSION: High blood pressure is not associated with a higher frequency of abnormal laboratory tests. The association of high blood pressure and obesity, however, increases the detection of diabetes and dyslipidemias.
