Scientific Publishing in the era of Artificial Intelligence: Integrity and Responsibility

Mário Martins Oliveira et al. Gláucia Maria Moraes de Oliveira

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the scientific process across all stages, making it an innovative tool, used globally, influencing research generation, experimental design, data analysis, writing, and all complex dynamics of peer review and dissemination of results.

While the entire scientific community is incorporating AI as part of the research process to enhance efficiency, the development of regulations and adequate algorithms to monitor the quality, truthfulness, and integrity of data science is becoming a critical matter of discussion, regarding the fundamental role of scientific communication.

The Continuous Evolution of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia: 77 Years and Beyond

Gláucia Maria Moraes de Oliveira et al. Fausto J. Pinto

The Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (ABC Cardiol) is the most influential Brazilian scientific journal dedicated to the dissemination of research in cardiology and cardiovascular sciences. Founded in 1948 and published by the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (in Portuguese, SBC), it is over 70 years old and recognized as the highest-impact cardiology journal in Latin America. The ABC Cardiol is a monthly, bilingual publication, indexed in major international databases (PMC, PubMed Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, SciELO, Lilacs, DOAJ), adopts open access policies, and, in 2025, achieved an impact factor of 1.9 (JCR). In addition, ABC Cardiol is classified as Qualis A2, according to the scientific journal classification from the Coordination for Enhancement of Higher-Level Personnel (in Portuguese, CAPES) ().

Relevant and Independent Scientific Publications: The Path of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Camila Mota Guida et al. Rhanderson Cardoso

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), in 2023, the average number of publications per candidate accepted into medical residency programs in the United States was six for internal medicine, eight for neurology, nine for general surgery, and 19 for otolaryngology.Similarly, in countries such as Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Australia, publications are an important criterion in medical residency or postgraduate program evaluations.

In the United States, there is an established culture of participation in research projects among aspiring physicians even before entering medical school. Additionally, North American medical students commonly use the summer break between their first and second years to work in basic, translational, or clinical research laboratories to strengthen their applications for competitive residencies.

Brazilian Society of Cardiology Guidelines: New Norms, New Challenges

Carisi A. Polanczyk et al. Leonardo Castro Luna Helena Cramer Veiga Rey Humberto Graner Moreira … José Airton de Arruda Pedro Gabriel Melo de Barros e Silva Mario de Seixas Rocha

Brazilian Society of Cardiology Guidelines

The first Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC) guidelines also emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, addressing issues related to the diagnosis and treatment of prevalent cardiovascular diseases, such as high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and heart failure. In 2006, the SBC’s Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee (ConDir) was established. It is responsible for coordinating the development of guidelines and technical standards for clinical practice among Brazilian cardiologists. The guidelines of other international cardiology societies have clear goals, including: improved care quality; safe and effective treatment for the greatest number of patients, regardless of location or health care provider; curbing unscientific practices; and optimal use of the available resources, avoiding waste and promoting the health system’s sustainability.

SBC Guidelines have become an important reference for cardiovascular care in Brazil, serving as a guide for health professionals and the entire ecosystem: providers, payment sources, and health managers.

Women Representation in Scientific Publications

Daniela do Carmo Rassi Frota et al. Viviane Tiemi Hotta

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly named February 11 the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This date has been celebrated since 2016, with the aims of raising awareness of women’s excellence in science and reminding the international community that science and gender equality must advance hand in hand.

Data from the United Nations and UNESCO indicate that women represent less than 30% of researchers worldwide and demonstrate how barriers and underrepresentation of women and girls still persist, especially in areas such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Publication of a Scientific Article: What Authors Need to Know

Marcella dos Santos Lopes da Silva et al. Cláudio Tinoco Mesquita

What are the first steps to write a scientific article?

It is always important to remember who the authors of a scientific article should be, namely, the people who: (1) helped to conceive or design the work; or obtained, analyzed, or interpreted research data; and (2) participated in writing the manuscript or critically reviewed it for important intellectual content; and (3) gave final approval of the version of the text to be published; and (4) agreed to ensure that questions regarding the accuracy or completeness of any part of the work are properly investigated and resolved.

A scientific article is structured to allow other researchers to understand the context, objectives, methods used, results obtained, and conclusions of the study ().
