The Use of Simulation-Based Learning in Cardiology Education: A Systematic Review

André Luiz Lisboa Cordeiro et al. Washington Luiz Abreu de Jesus Tiago Veltri Osmastroni da Trindade Rodolfo Macedo Cruz Pimenta Rodolfo Prado da Silva

Abstract

The use of simulation in medical education is now a well-established practice. Many articles currently explore various simulation methods and the impacts reported by students. In cardiology, this is no exception; however, reviews on the topic do not focus on a specific area.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the existing evidence on the use of simulation in medical education, with a specific focus on cardiology.

This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and searched the Ovid MEDLINE, Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), CINAHL, and CENTRAL databases. Clinical trials reporting the use of realistic simulation for teaching cardiology were included. Two independent reviewers assessed the studies for eligibility. The simulation methods and topics, along with their evaluations, were analyzed.

A total of 435 articles were initially identified based on the search criteria. Seven articles were selected for detailed analysis. Three of these studies reported an improvement in cardiac auscultation skills through simulation. One study showed improved ability to recognize coronary anatomy; another demonstrated enhanced performance during catheterization, and one highlighted better outcomes during angioplasty. Only one study showed a slight improvement in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. In addition to these clinical improvements, there was also a noted increase in student engagement and satisfaction.

Realistic simulation, when integrated as a complement to existing curricula, enhances the performance of cardiology students.

Machine Learning in Medicine: Review and Applicability

Gabriela Miana de Mattos Paixão et al. Bruno Campos Santos Rodrigo Martins de Araujo Manoel Horta Ribeiro … Jermana Lopes de Moraes Antonio L. Ribeiro

Introduction

Machine learning (ML) is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) that explores the study and construction of computational algorithms based on data learning,, rather than preprogrammed instructions. The main objective of an ML model is to construct a computer system that learns from a predefined database and, in the end, generates a model for prediction, classification, or detection.

The application of ML in practice is mainly aimed at handling consolidated databases with heterogeneous information where there is a limitation to the use of conventional statistical techniques., ML algorithms are already widespread in different areas, such as banking systems for fraud detection, internet search engines, video surveillance systems, data security, business logistics, robotics, and, in medicine, diagnosis and prognosis. With the digitalization of medical records, laboratory tests, and imaging, there has been a growth in database are sources for the application of ML techniques, with the aims of prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of diseases.

Retention of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Skills in Medical Students: What Can Be Done to Improve Them?

Sergio Timerman et al. Thatiane Facholi Polatri

Since the beginning, great researchers have been working on estimating the best technique for maintaining the body blood flow of a victim undergoing CPA. Several techniques were applied, such as the Trotting method and rolling over a barrel. The technique of external chest compressions was conceived in 1960, based on the observation made by Kouwenhoven, Jude, and Knickerbocker that adequate compression on the lower third of the sternum provided sufficient artificial circulation to sustain life in animals and humans with cardiac arrest. Since then, many studies have been carried out to improve the depth and frequency of appropriate compressions to maintain coronary perfusion at an adequate level, contributing to the return of spontaneous circulation.

According to the 2020 worldwide guidelines publications, performing high-quality compressions refers to performing compressions at a frequency of 100 -120 per minute, depth of 5-6cm, returning the chest to the normal position between compression minimize interruptions in compressions avoiding excessive ventilation. In this sense, a big question arises: do we understand the parameters for performing good compressions, which significantly increase the survival of CPA victims? However, how to ensure that health professionals and the general public can learn the technique and retain this learning to the point of reproducing it in an actual emergency?

A Reflection on Conflicts of Interest in Medical Guidelines

Max Grinberg

Prescribing a drug directly to the patient, recruiting a volunteer for a clinical research, lecturing at a specialty congress, participating in a committee that elaborates clinical guidelines, supervising a clinical visit with residents, giving your opinion for colleagues over coffee.

All of these situations are characterized by human interaction, greater or lesser asymmetry of knowledge, and multiple interests, where the possible privilege of one may cause damage to another.
