Oral Contraception: Beyond What Meets the Eye. Sorry, the Ovaries!

Biljana Parapid et al. Snežana Rakić

The concept of oral contraception, historically, was supposed to enable control of unwanted pregnancies and facilitate family planning for women of reproductive age in an elegant fashion for everyone needing it. However, the influence of different prescriptions on women’s health during active use, as well as later on in life – beyond the quintessential fear of thromboses lay women worldwide have – has not been studied extensively or meticulously, despite the widespread use. Also, with some countries recently starting to embrace the over-the-counter concept for oral contraceptives in addition to the mechanical ones, a mandatory visit to a physician to get a personalized prescription will become a growing phenomenon and its public health consequences are unforeseeable, evidently.

In the current issue of IJCS, we had the pleasure of reading a paper by Gomes et al, who presented their original article with results of a cross-over study of the influence of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on the lipid and inflammatory profile of women using combined oral contraceptives (COC) that showed a beneficial effect to the latter, but not the former.

Climacteric Period and Cardiovascular risk: a Golden Opportunity to Watch and Succeed!

Catarina Sousa

The gradual loss of ovarian function with concomitant decrease in estrogen levels, characteristic of the climacteric period, leads to several metabolic changes and symptoms. Significant effects on the health and quality of life of women occur, and vasomotor symptoms during this transitional period are almost universally recognized. Among physical symptoms, hot flushes and night sweats are very prevalent and may be very disturbing.

However, cardiovascular risk is frequently neglected not only by these women, but surprisingly, also by part of the medical community. Metabolic changes of the climaterium are associated with increased risk of diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, the rate of cardiovascular events markedly increases after the age of 45. This is extremely relevant, as cardiovascular disease is the single most frequent cause of death among women.

Assessment of the Cardiovascular Risk and Physical Activity of Individuals Exercising at a Public Park in the City of São Paulo

Cláudia L. M. Forjaz et al. Taís Tinucci Teresa Bartholomeu Tiago E. M. Fernandes … Vivian Casagrande José Geraldo Massucato

OBJECTIVE: Physical exercise helps to prevent cardiovascular disorders. Campaigns promoting exercise have taken many people to the parks of our city. The most appropriate exercise for preventing cardiovascular disorders is the aerobic modality; inappropriate exercise acutely increases cardiovascular risk, especially in individuals at higher risk. Therefore, assessing the cardiovascular risk of these individuals and their physical activities is of practical value. METHODS: In the Parque Fernando Costa, we carried out the project “Exercício e Coração” (Exercise and Heart) involving 226 individuals. Assessment of the cardiovascular risk and of the physical activity practiced by the individuals exercising at that park was performed with a questionnaire and measurement of the following parameters: blood pressure, weight, height, and waist/hip ratio. The individuals were lectured on the benefits provided by exercise and how to correctly exercise. Each participant received a customized exercise prescription. RESULTS: In regard to risk, 43% of the individuals had health problems and 7% of the healthy individuals had symptoms that could be attributed to heart disorders. High blood pressure was observed in a large amount of the population. In regard to the adequacy of the physical activity, the individuals exercised properly. The project was well accepted, because the participants not only appreciated the initiative, but also reported altering their exercise habits after taking part in the project. CONCLUSION: Data obtained in the current study point to the need to be more careful in assessing the health of individuals who exercise at parks, suggesting that city parks should have a sector designated for assessing and guiding physical activity.
