The Congenital Heart Disease Diagnosis List for the eleventh iteration of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD11): Translation to Brazilian Portuguese

Vera Demarchi Aiello et al. Sandra da Silva Mattos

Background

The International Society for Nomenclature of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease (ISNPCHD) is an organization composed by specialists in Pediatric Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery and Morphology. It was created aiming at unifying the terminology of congenital and acquired pediatric heart disease across the world. The unified lexicon allows for inter-institutional and international diagnostic comparisons and exchange of information on the outcomes of children and adults with congenital heart defects.

Initially gathering annually, as the “The International Nomenclature Working Group for the Mapping and Coding of Nomenclatures for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease”, the members decided to create, in 2005, the International Society (ISNPCHD), extending the membership to incorporate professionals from underrepresented areas of the world.

Correct Anatomical Orientation of the Heart and Reflections on the Nomenclature Used in Daily Practice

Viviane Tiemi Hotta et al. Vera Demarchi Aiello

Closing remarks

This study does not intend to exhaust the subject nor recommend an immediate change in the current nomenclature. It aims to acknowledge and educate the reader about the frequent use of terms that are not completely adequate in describing the cardiac morphology evaluated with different imaging techniques. The nomenclature based on the correct anatomical orientation significantly facilitates the spatial location of the cardiac structures and the relationship of the heart with the other organs. It also allows the exchange and comparison of information between different imaging techniques and guides diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, e.g., in electrophysiology or multimodal examination.

However, the adoption of changes in nomenclature already established by usage will require increased user awareness and recognition of the need for change and efforts towards the implementation and acceptance of these changes.
