Unveiling the Link between MASLD-Associated Liver Fibrosis and Subclinical Atherosclerosis

Maria Cristina Izar et al. Francisco Antonio Helfenstein Fonseca

Metabolically-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is quickly becoming the most prevalent chronic liver condition globally, encompassing the broad metabolic spectrum formerly attributed to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease., Its progression to fibrosis and cirrhosis carries not only hepatic risks but systemic implications—chief among them, cardiovascular disease, now recognized as the leading cause of mortality in MASLD patients.,

The prospective study titled “Relationship between Liver Fibrosis Due to Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease and Subclinical Atherosclerosis” offers timely and significant insights into this hepatic-cardiovascular interplay. By evaluating non-invasive vascular markers such as carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and vascular age (VA), the authors provide evidence of accelerated vascular aging in MASLD patients, particularly those with liver fibrosis.

The Value of Vascular Ultrasonography in Defining Inflammatory Activity in Takayasu Arteritis: Case Reports

Fanilda Souto Barros et al. Simone Nascimento dos Santos Joana Storino Cláudia Maria Vilas Freire … Felipe Souto Barros Valquiria Garcia Dinis

Introduction

Takayasu arteritis (TA) is a rare large-vessel arteritis that primarily affects the aorta and its major branches. The greatest challenge is to identify disease activity, since therapeutic measures modify the clinical course of the disease.

Vascular ultrasonography (VUS) is a promising tool for characterizing vessel wall inflammation and monitoring hemodynamic changes in response to therapy.

Association between coronary artery atherosclerosis and the intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery measured on ultrasonography

Eduardo Maffini da Rosa et al. Caroline Kramer Iran Castro

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery of patients with coronary artery disease is greater than that of individuals without that disease. METHODS: Case-control prospective study of prevalence assessing the thickness of the intima and media layers of 29 patients with coronary artery disease and 29 individuals without that disease by using ultrasonography of the carotid arteries. Diabetic patients and those with peripheral artery and cerebral vasculopathies were excluded from the study. RESULTS: The mean age was 51±7.5 years. Fifty-five per cent of the patients were males. Acute myocardial infarction was present in 62%; cardiac catheterization in 72%; saphenous bypass in 5%; and coronary angioplasty in 24%. The intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery in case patients and in control patients was, respectively, 0.81±0.25 mm and 0.62±0.18 mm (P=0.001). CONCLUSION: Intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery was significantly greater in patients with coronary artery disease.
