  <body>
    <p>Scientific development is currently happening at an increasingly faster pace. With this situation, the scientific journals are required to commit to disseminating new knowledge with greater agility and broad propagation by the main international indexers. On the other hand, the mission of the scientific journals is also to encourage the propagation and discussion of new subjects in scientific communities, a situation of great importance mainly for those journals associated with medical societies and with a predominantly national circulation.</p>
    <p>With respect to scientific propagation at an international level, the use of the English language has been well defined as being universal, leaving those publications in other languages to the background. Only articles published in English in broadly indexed journals achieve a greater number of citations, collaborating effectively in consolidating the involved research groups and elevating the impact of the periodicals in which they were published.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref> On the other hand, health professionals in several countries still encounter difficulties in accessing the international scientific literature and find in their local language the primary means to keep up with new knowledge.</p>
    <p>According to the indexer SCImago, from the company Elsevier, Portuguese-speaking countries were responsible for more than 20 thousand scientific publications indexed in the health-related area in 2015.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">2</xref> Of these, 1130 were published in the areas of cardiology or cardiovascular sciences, representing 2.1% of all the publications in these areas of knowledge.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">2</xref> Most of these studies originated from Brazil or Portugal, countries that have consistently ranked among the 30 most important in the production of knowledge in health sciences over the past two decades. Among the publications from Portuguese-speaking countries, there is a predominance of publications in journals with international circulation, written in English, which have a greater potential for knowledge dissemination. However, about 42% of the studies from Brazilian or Portuguese researchers have been only published in Portuguese or in both languages, English and Portuguese, emphasizing the relevance of these publications for countries of Lusitanian culture. According to the SciELO portal, the number of views of articles published in Portuguese in the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, a journal with articles indexed in the portal in both Portuguese and English, totaled more than 4.6 million downloads in 2016, while the number of downloads of publications in English of these same studies were slightly more than 2.9 million.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">3</xref> The greater number of views of articles in Portuguese both for original articles and articles focused on knowledge dissemination and discussion, clearly demonstrate the importance of maintaining the publications in our language for better access by our professionals.</p>
    <p>Another important fact refers to the observation that the journals published by national societies concentrate mainly publications originating in their own countries, representing the main vehicle for the international dissemination of internally conducted research. In this sense, the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia continues to be the journal responsible for dissemination of approximately 25% of the Brazilian publications indexed in cardiology or cardiovascular sciences,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> the same happening with the Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia with regard to almost 30% of the publications from Portugal in these areas of knowledge. On the other hand, these journals are able to publish less than half of the currently submitted articles, limiting the appropriate dissemination of studies by many researchers who find difficulties in accessing other means of publication.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref>
		</p>
    <p>Based on these facts, scientific publications from countries with specific cultural characteristics, such as Portuguese-speaking ones, must be guided by policies that take into account both the need for wide dissemination of their contents at the international level, as well as their appropriate dissemination among members of their own professional community. With the increasing scientific research in cardiology and cardiovascular sciences in Portuguese-speaking countries in recent years, new opportunities have opened up for the expansion of our editorial activity. In this sense, the incorporation of the International Journal of Cardiovascular Sciences by the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, a journal published in English and Portuguese with a similar editorial quality as the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, meets the conditions suitable for a greater international reach for the Brazilian cardiology science without neglecting a wide dissemination at the national level.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref>

      <p>O desenvolvimento cient&#237;fico ocorre atualmente de maneira cada vez mais r&#225;pida. Esta situa&#231;&#227;o exige dos peri&#243;dicos cient&#237;ficos o compromisso de divulga&#231;&#227;o de novos conhecimentos com maior agilidade e ampla propaga&#231;&#227;o pelos principais indexadores internacionais. Por outro lado, a miss&#227;o das revistas cient&#237;ficas tamb&#233;m &#233; a de fomentar a propaga&#231;&#227;o e a discuss&#227;o de novos temas nas comunidades cient&#237;ficas, situa&#231;&#227;o que &#233; de grande relev&#226;ncia, principalmente para os peri&#243;dicos vinculados a sociedades m&#233;dicas e de circula&#231;&#227;o predominantemente nacional.</p>
      <p>Com rela&#231;&#227;o &#224; divulga&#231;&#227;o cient&#237;fica a n&#237;vel internacional, o emprego da l&#237;ngua inglesa est&#225; bem definido como sendo de uso universal, deixando em segundo plano as publica&#231;&#245;es escritas em outros idiomas. Apenas artigos publicados em ingl&#234;s e em peri&#243;dicos de ampla indexa&#231;&#227;o alcan&#231;am maior n&#250;mero de cita&#231;&#245;es, colaborando de forma efetiva para a consolida&#231;&#227;o dos grupos de pesquisa envolvidos e tamb&#233;m para a eleva&#231;&#227;o do impacto dos pr&#243;prios peri&#243;dicos onde foram publicados.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref> Por outro lado, profissionais da sa&#250;de em muitos pa&#237;ses ainda encontram dificuldade no acesso &#224; literatura cient&#237;fica internacional, tendo o seu idioma local como principal meio de acompanhamento dos novos conhecimentos.</p>
      <p>De acordo com o indexador SCImago, da empresa Elsevier, os pa&#237;ses de l&#237;ngua portuguesa foram respons&#225;veis por mais de 20 mil publica&#231;&#245;es cient&#237;ficas indexadas na &#225;rea da sa&#250;de em 2015.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">2</xref> Entre elas, 1130 foram publicadas na &#225;rea da cardiologia ou das ci&#234;ncias cardiovasculares, representando 2,1% do total de publica&#231;&#245;es nestas &#225;reas do conhecimento.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">2</xref> A maior parte destes trabalhos s&#227;o oriundos do Brasil ou de Portugal, pa&#237;ses que t&#234;m se mantido entre os 30 mais importantes na produ&#231;&#227;o do conhecimento em ci&#234;ncias da sa&#250;de nas &#250;ltimas duas d&#233;cadas. Entre as publica&#231;&#245;es de pa&#237;ses de l&#237;ngua portuguesa, predominam as publicadas em peri&#243;dicos de circula&#231;&#227;o internacional, realizadas na l&#237;ngua inglesa, que apresentam um potencial maior de difus&#227;o do conhecimento. No entanto, cerca de 42% dos trabalhos de pesquisadores brasileiros ou portugueses foram publicados apenas na l&#237;ngua portuguesa ou nos dois idiomas, ingl&#234;s e portugu&#234;s, ressaltando a relev&#226;ncia destas publica&#231;&#245;es para os pa&#237;ses de cultura lusitana. De acordo com o portal SciELO, os acessos aos artigos publicados em l&#237;ngua portuguesa nos Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, peri&#243;dico que tem seus artigos indexados no portal tanto em portugu&#234;s quanto em ingl&#234;s, somaram mais de 4,6 milh&#245;es de downloads em 2016, enquanto que o n&#250;mero de downloads para as publica&#231;&#245;es em l&#237;ngua inglesa dos mesmos trabalhos foram pouco mais de 2,9 milh&#245;es.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">3</xref> O maior acesso aos artigos em portugu&#234;s tanto para os artigos originais, como tamb&#233;m para os artigos de divulga&#231;&#227;o e discuss&#227;o do conhecimento, demonstram claramente a import&#226;ncia de manter as publica&#231;&#245;es em nossa l&#237;ngua para o melhor acesso dos nossos profissionais.</p>
      <p>Outro fato importante se refere &#224; observa&#231;&#227;o de que os peri&#243;dicos publicados por sociedades nacionais concentram principalmente publica&#231;&#245;es originadas dos pr&#243;prios pa&#237;ses, representando o principal ve&#237;culo de divulga&#231;&#227;o internacional das pesquisas realizadas internamente. Neste sentido, os Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia continuam a ser o peri&#243;dico respons&#225;vel pela divulga&#231;&#227;o de cerca de 25% das publica&#231;&#245;es brasileiras indexadas em cardiologia ou em ci&#234;ncias cardiovasculares,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> o mesmo acontecendo com a Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia com rela&#231;&#227;o a quase 30% das publica&#231;&#245;es oriundas de Portugal nestas &#225;reas do conhecimento. Por outro lado, estes peri&#243;dicos conseguem publicar menos da metade dos artigos submetidos atualmente, limitando a adequada divulga&#231;&#227;o dos trabalhos de muitos pesquisadores que encontram dificuldade em acessar outros meios de publica&#231;&#227;o.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref>
			</p>
      <p>Com base nestes fatos, as publica&#231;&#245;es cient&#237;ficas oriundas de pa&#237;ses com caracter&#237;sticas culturais espec&#237;ficas, como os de l&#237;ngua portuguesa, devem ser guiadas por pol&#237;ticas que levem em conta tanto a necessidade de ampla divulga&#231;&#227;o de seu conte&#250;do a n&#237;vel internacional, como tamb&#233;m a sua adequada divulga&#231;&#227;o entre os membros de sua pr&#243;pria comunidade profissional. Com o incremento da pesquisa cient&#237;fica em cardiologia e em ci&#234;ncias cardiovasculares nos pa&#237;ses de l&#237;ngua portuguesa nos &#250;ltimos anos, novas oportunidades se abriram para a amplia&#231;&#227;o de nossa atividade editorial. Neste sentido, a incorpora&#231;&#227;o do International Journal of Cardiovascular Sciences pela Sociedade Brasileira de Cardiologia, peri&#243;dico publicado em ingl&#234;s e em portugu&#234;s com a mesma qualidade editorial dos Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, re&#250;ne as condi&#231;&#245;es adequadas para o maior alcance internacional da ci&#234;ncia cardiol&#243;gica brasileira, sem se descuidar de sua ampla divulga&#231;&#227;o a n&#237;vel nacional.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref>
