  <body>
    <p>Com acometimento de, aproximadamente, 30% da popula&#231;&#227;o brasileira, a hipertens&#227;o arterial &#233; elencada com uma das principais causas de Doen&#231;a Cardiovascular.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref> A atual recomenda&#231;&#227;o da OMS para ingest&#227;o de s&#243;dio, &#233; que seja &lt; 2g/pessoa/dia, ou 5g de sal/pessoa/dia. Contudo, j&#225; &#233; conhecido que o padr&#227;o de ingest&#227;o de sal da popula&#231;&#227;o brasileira alcan&#231;a at&#233; 12g/dia. Ainda que o aumento press&#243;rico tenha etiologia multifatorial, o consumo excessivo de s&#243;dio figura entre as principais causas.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">2</xref> , <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">3</xref></p>
    <p>Esse elemento tem importantes fun&#231;&#245;es fisiol&#243;gicas como regula&#231;&#227;o do volume extracelular, condu&#231;&#227;o nervosa e fun&#231;&#227;o muscular.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> H&#225; pouca diverg&#234;ncia na literatura sobre os benef&#237;cios da redu&#231;&#227;o do consumo de s&#243;dio para popula&#231;&#227;o hipertensa. Uma estrat&#233;gia bastante abordada pelas m&#237;dias sociais e impressa foi a ado&#231;&#227;o do Sal do Himalaia por ser rico em ferro, zinco, c&#225;lcio, magn&#233;sio e pot&#225;ssio e seus supostos benef&#237;cios em detrimento do sal regular no controle press&#243;rico de hipertensos.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> - <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">9</xref> Nesse contexto, Loyola IP et al.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">10</xref> avaliaram o impacto da ingest&#227;o de sal de mesa e do sal do Himalaia sobre os par&#226;metros press&#243;ricos e a concentra&#231;&#227;o urin&#225;ria de s&#243;dio em indiv&#237;duos hipertensos.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">10</xref></p>
    <p>Nessa publica&#231;&#227;o, os autores realizaram um estudo randomizado, do tipo crossover em que foram recrutadas mulheres entre 40 e 65 anos. A amostra foi ent&#227;o dividida em 2 grupos: sal do Himalaia e sal de mesa. O per&#237;odo de interven&#231;&#227;o foi de 4 semanas para cada tipo de tratamento e, ap&#243;s 2 semanas de washout, houve altern&#226;ncia do tipo de sal por mais 4 semanas. As amostras de sal foram avaliadas e fortificadas com iodo, e foram dadas orienta&#231;&#245;es sobre alimenta&#231;&#227;o e uso dos tipos de sal.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">10</xref></p>
    <p>Ao final, 18 mulheres foram consideradas eleg&#237;veis para o estudo. A mediana de dura&#231;&#227;o da interven&#231;&#227;o foi de 35 dias, e a m&#233;dia de consumo de sal foi de 6,37g e 5,98g de sal do Himalaia e sal de mesa, respectivamente. Apesar da aus&#234;ncia de diferen&#231;a estat&#237;stica entre os grupos quanto aos par&#226;metros press&#243;ricos e concentra&#231;&#227;o urin&#225;ria de s&#243;dio, esse trabalho coloca uma lente de aumento sobre a import&#226;ncia de ensaios cl&#237;nicos controlados e randomizados sobre a tem&#225;tica. A comercializa&#231;&#227;o e utiliza&#231;&#227;o do sal do Himalaia ganhou muita aten&#231;&#227;o da m&#237;dia, em especial pelos supostos efeitos anti-hipertensivos, e esse trabalho fortalece cientificamente a orienta&#231;&#227;o sobre o consumo desse elemento pela popula&#231;&#227;o hiper e normotensa. Outro ponto importante a ser ressaltado &#233; o papel fundamental desenvolvido pela mudan&#231;a de estilo de vida e pr&#225;tica regular de atividade f&#237;sica como estrat&#233;gias de tratamento para hipertens&#227;o arterial.</p>

    <body>
      <p>With the involvement of approximately 30% of the Brazilian population, arterial hypertension is listed as one of the main causes of cardiovascular disease.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref> The current WHO recommendation for sodium intake is &lt; 2g/person/day, or 5g salt/person/day. However, it is already known that the salt intake pattern of the Brazilian population reaches up to 12g/day. Although the increase in blood pressure has a multifactorial etiology, excessive sodium intake is among the main causes.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">2</xref> , <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">3</xref></p>
      <p>This element has important physiological functions such as regulation of extracellular volume, nerve conduction and muscle function.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> There is little disagreement in the literature about the benefits of reducing sodium intake for the hypertensive population. A strategy widely addressed by social media and in print was the adoption of Himalayan Salt for being rich in iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium and potassium and its supposed benefits over table salt in pressure control on hypertensive patients.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> - <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">9</xref> In this context, Loyola IP et al.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">10</xref> evaluated the impact of table salt and Himalayan salt intake on blood pressure parameters and urinary sodium concentration in hypertensive individuals.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">10</xref></p>
      <p>In this publication, the authors performed a randomized, crossover study in which women aged between 40 and 65 years were recruited. The sample was then divided into 2 groups: Himalayan salt and table salt. The intervention period was 4 weeks for each type of treatment, and after 2 weeks of washout, there was an alternation of salt type for another 4 weeks. Salt samples were evaluated and fortified with iodine, and guidance was given on diet and the use of types of salt.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">10</xref></p>
      <p>In the end, 18 women were considered eligible for the study. The median duration of the intervention was 35 days, and the mean salt intake was 6.37g and 5.98g of Himalayan salt and table salt, respectively. Despite the lack of statistical difference between the groups regarding blood pressure parameters and urinary sodium concentration, this work magnifies the importance of controlled and randomized clinical trials on the subject. The commercialization and use of Himalayan salt have gained a lot of media attention, especially for its supposed antihypertensive effects, and this work scientifically strengthens the orientation on the intake of this element by the hyper and normotensive population. It is important to emphasize the fundamental role of lifestyle changes and regular physical activity as treatment strategies for arterial hypertension.</p>
