      Minieditorial referente ao artigo: Quercetina Melhora o Perfil Lip&#237;dico e Apolipoproteico em Ratos Tratados com Glicocorticoides em Altas Doses
    </p>
    <p>Flavonoides, tais como antocianinas, flavon&#243;is, flavan&#243;is, flavanonas, flavonas e isoflavonas, s&#227;o os polifen&#243;is mais abundantes na dieta humana. A quercetina, um tipo de flavonol, &#233; um dos mais estudados entre esses compostos.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref> - <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">3</xref> A quercetina &#233; um metab&#243;lito secund&#225;rio de planta, da subclasse flavonol da fam&#237;lia dos flavonoides presentes em muitas frutas e vegetais, como por exemplo ma&#231;&#227;s, uvas, cebolas e pimentas.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">3</xref> , <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref></p>
    <p>Nos &#250;ltimos anos, as evid&#234;ncias mostraram que a quercetina &#233; um potente produto natural antioxidante e anti-inflamat&#243;rio.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> A quercetina &#233; capaz de proteger as c&#233;lulas contra danos oxidativos causados por esp&#233;cies reativas e ativar enzimas antioxidantes, como a heme oxigenase e o fator nuclear eritroide 2 relacionado ao fator 2 em diferentes modelos.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> - <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">7</xref> Em rela&#231;&#227;o &#224; sa&#250;de cardiovascular, estudos in vitro , em animais e em seres humanos, relataram efeitos ben&#233;ficos, incluindo a melhora do perfil lip&#237;dico,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> , <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> , <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">8</xref> - <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">10</xref> conforme explorado no estudo de Derakhshanian et al. apresentado nesta se&#231;&#227;o.</p>
    <p>O estudo de Derakhshanian et al.,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref> aborda o efeito da quercetina na hipercolesterolemia induzida por altas doses de metilprednisolona em ratos, um novo uso desse composto bioativo.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref> Glicocorticoides (GC), como a metilprednisolona, s&#227;o amplamente utilizados no tratamento de diferentes doen&#231;as. No entanto, altas doses de GC podem levar a efeitos adversos, incluindo altera&#231;&#245;es no metabolismo lip&#237;dico.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">12</xref> Os autores testaram duas doses de quercetina por seis semanas e obtiveram uma redu&#231;&#227;o no colesterol total (CT), lipoprote&#237;na de baixa densidade colesterol (LDL), triglic&#233;rides (TG) e lipoprote&#237;na de alta densidade colesterol (HDL), raz&#245;es CT/HDL, TG/HDL e LDL/HDL e apolipoprote&#237;na B (apo B)/apolipoprote&#237;na (A1), um indicador do equil&#237;brio aterog&#234;nico plasm&#225;tico<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">13</xref> e um potencial marcador de risco cardiovascular.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">14</xref> Os autores tamb&#233;m discutem que pouco se sabe sobre os mecanismos pelos quais os GCs alteram os n&#237;veis de lip&#237;dios no sangue, sugerindo que o efeito da quercetina pode ser atribu&#237;do &#224; sua propriedade antioxidante e ao potencial de modula&#231;&#227;o da glicose.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref> Um ponto interessante do trabalho de Derakhshanian et al.,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref> &#233; que ambas as doses produziram um efeito protetor na hipocolesterolemia induzida por glicocorticoides, excluindo um efeito superior da dose mais alta empregada. &#201; importante observar que pesquisas anteriores sobre estimativa de consumo humano variam de 3 a 40mg no padr&#227;o de dieta ocidental a 250mg na dieta rica em frutas e vegetais.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">3</xref> Portanto, a dose mais baixa poderia ser obtida de uma dieta rica em fontes de quercetina, como apontado pelo presente artigo.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref></p>
    <p>O interesse em compostos naturais para o manejo de diferentes condi&#231;&#245;es aumentou nos &#250;ltimos anos devido ao seu potencial de seguran&#231;a em compara&#231;&#227;o aos compostos sint&#233;ticos.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> Embora ainda existam muitas d&#250;vidas sobre o uso de flavonoides na sa&#250;de humana, o estudo de Derakhshanian et al.,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref> adiciona dados sobre o papel adjuvante da quercetina nos dist&#250;rbios metab&#243;licos.</p>

        Short Editorial related to the article: Quercetin Ameliorates Lipid and Apolipoprotein Profile in High-Dose Glucocorticoid Treated Rats
      </p>
      <p>Flavonoids, such as anthocyanins, flavonols, flavanols, flavanones, flavones, and isoflavones are the most abundant polyphenols in the human diet. The flavonol quercetin is one of the most studied among these compounds.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref> - <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">3</xref> Quercetin is a secondary plant metabolite of the flavonol subclass of flavonoids present in many fruits and vegetables, e.g. apples, grapes, onions and peppers.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">3</xref> , <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref></p>
      <p>In the past years, evidence showed that quercetin is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory natural product.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> Quercetin is able to protect cells from oxidative damage caused by reactive species and activate antioxidant enzymes, such as heme oxygenase and nuclear factor erythroid 2&#8211;related factor 2 in different models.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> - <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">7</xref> Regarding cardiovascular health, in vitro, animal and human studies have reported beneficial effects, including improving lipid profile,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> , <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> , <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">8</xref> - <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">10</xref> as explored in the study of Derakhshanian et al. presented in this section.</p>
      <p>The study by Derakhshanian et al.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref> addresses the effect of quercetin on hypercholesterolemia induced by high doses of methylprednisolone in rats, novel use of this bioactive compound.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref> Glucocorticoids (GC) such as methylprednisolone are widely used in the treatment of different diseases. However, high dose GC can lead to adverse effects, including changes in lipid metabolism.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">12</xref> The authors tested two doses of quercetin for six weeks and obtained a reduction in total cholesterol (CT), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), CT/HDL, TG/HDL and LDL/HDL ratios and Apolipoprotein B (Apo B)/ Apolipoprotein (A1) ratio, an indicator of plasma atherogenic balance<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">13</xref> and a potential cardiovascular risk marker.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">14</xref> The authors also discuss that little is known about the mechanisms by which GCs alter blood lipids, and suggest that the effect of quercetin could be attributed to its antioxidant property and glucose-modulating potential.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref> An interesting point of Derakhshanian et al.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref> work is that both doses produced a protective effect on glycosteroid-induced hypocholesterolemia, excluding a superior effect of the higher dose employed. It is important to note that previous research about human intake estimative ranges from 3 - 40mg in Western diet pattern to 250mg in high fruit and vegetable diet.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">3</xref> Thus, the lowest dose could be obtained from a diet rich in quercetin sources, as pointed by the present paper.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref></p>
      <p>The interest in natural compounds for the management of different conditions has grown in recent years due to their safety potential in comparison to synthetic compounds.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> Although there are still many questions about the use of flavonoids in human health, the study by Derakhshanian et al.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref> adds data about the adjuvant role of quercetin in metabolic disorders.</p>
