  <body>
    <p>Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are nuclear receptors that participate in nutrient and energy metabolism.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref> In a recent paper entitled &#8220;Nrf2, NF-&#954;B and PPAR &#946;/&#948; mRNA expression profile in patients with coronary artery disease&#8221; (CAD), Barbosa et al. found that PPAR&#946;/&#948; was highest expressed in the CAD patients when compared to patients without CAD.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">2</xref> Beyond its heart-protective effects associated to improvement of cardiac function and amelioration, the pathological progression of cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, cardiac oxidative damage, ischemia-reperfusion injury, lipotoxic cardiac disfunction and lipid-induced cardiac inflammation,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">3</xref> others functions PPAR&#946;/&#948; deserve be considered in the wide context of the cardiovascular disorders.</p>
    <p>Obesity and dyslipidemia are risk factors for cardiovascular disease<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> and, in this sense, the modulation of PPAR&#946;/&#948; can be interesting because it is associated with the improvement of fatty acid (FA) catabolism in skeletal muscle or alternating fibre type muscle during oxidative metabolism.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> PPAR&#946;/&#948; activation also reduces pre-adipocyte proliferation and differentiation, and attenuates angiotensin II-mediated dysfunctional hypertrophic adipogenesis and inhibits inflammation in adipose tissue.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> Besides that, in the intestine, PPAR&#946;/&#948; can induce the production of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref> and butyrate and propionate, two SCFA, were associated with reduction in food intake.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">6</xref> Moreover, PPAR&#946;/&#948; improves hepatic FA oxidation which decreases the lipids availability for triglycerides synthesis and changes the expression of several apoproteins,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> contributing for elevating plasma levels of high-density lipoprotein and decline levels of low-density lipoprotein.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref>
		</p>
    <p>Thus, PPAR&#946;/&#948; can be a potential target in metabolic disorders.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> So, a question is pertinent: how to modulate PPAR&#946;/&#948;? In the grouP of natural ligands, this subtype is activated by carbaprostacyclin, components of very low-density lipoprotein and unsaturated FAs.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">7</xref>
		</p>
    <p>Unfortunately, PPAR&#946;/&#948; has not been so intensely studied like the subtypes &#945; and &#947;<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">7</xref> and little is known about the potential natural activators, even in the case of unsaturated FAs that can be easily obtained by diet and supplements. So, let's look forward to this answer: it is possible to modulate PPAR&#946;/&#948; by dietetic bioactive compounds? Nonpharmacologic strategies to modulate other nuclear factors, such as nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), been pointed<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">8</xref> and it is wanted to the same with PPAR&#946;/&#948;. Caffeine,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">9</xref> genistein<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">10</xref> and non-occidental diet pattern<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">11</xref> already look promising.</p>

      <p>A obesidade e a dislipidemia s&#227;o fatores de risco para doen&#231;as cardiovasculares<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">4</xref> e, nesse sentido, a modula&#231;&#227;o do PPAR&#946;/&#948; pode ser interessante, pois est&#225; associada &#224; melhora do catabolismo dos &#225;cidos graxos (AG) no m&#250;sculo esquel&#233;tico ou a altern&#226;ncia do tipo de fibra muscular durante o metabolismo oxidativo.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> A ativa&#231;&#227;o do PPAR&#946;/&#948; tamb&#233;m reduz a prolifera&#231;&#227;o e diferencia&#231;&#227;o de pr&#233;-adip&#243;citos e atenua a adipog&#234;nese hipertr&#243;fica disfuncional mediada pela angiotensina II e inibe a inflama&#231;&#227;o no tecido adiposo.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> Al&#233;m disso, no intestino, o PPAR&#946;/&#948; pode induzir a produ&#231;&#227;o de &#225;cidos graxos de cadeia curta (SCFA)<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref> e o butirato e o propionato, dois SCFA, foram associados &#224; redu&#231;&#227;o na ingest&#227;o de alimentos.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">6</xref> Al&#233;m disso, o PPAR&#946;/&#948; melhora a oxida&#231;&#227;o hep&#225;tica dos AG, o que diminui a disponibilidade de l&#237;pides para a s&#237;ntese de triglic&#233;rides e altera a express&#227;o de v&#225;rias apoprote&#237;nas,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> contribuindo para elevar os n&#237;veis plasm&#225;ticos de lipoprote&#237;na de alta densidade e diminuir os n&#237;veis de lipoprote&#237;na de baixa densidade.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref>

      <p>Assim, o PPAR&#946;/&#948; pode ser um alvo potencial em dist&#250;rbios metab&#243;licos.<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref> Portanto, uma pergunta &#233; pertinente: como modular o PPAR&#946;/&#948;?
